Champagne Dinner in Champaign
NAYA - Champaign IL
Tasted July 30, 2019 by Burgundy Al with 214 views
Introduction
The dinner was intended to be largely Champagne focused, and that was almost true. I had to bring a few interlopers. Great time with new and old friends. Very good restaurant.
Flight 1 (14 notes)
White
2010 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières

Tasted double blind. Clearly white Burgundy, even if in a rich style. Lots of ripe peach and poached pear throughout with sweet and complex spice notes in every nook and cranny. Very good now and it opened up with more air, but I would not think there further upside, but rather greater risk of oxidation. I correctly identified the vintage from three choices and the producer once told it was a "top 5" but thought it Leflaive les Combettes 2010.

N.V. Guillaume Sergent Champagne Premier Cru Le Chemin des Chappes
2017 disgorgement. 50% each Pinot Noir and Meunier, this cepage comes across as rich but too bready for my Champagne preferences with modest nuance.

Mediocre fill, dark color, but no worries, this was great. So much rich ripe and cooked orchard fruit notes with equally complex spice. Kept evolving and unfolding. I would have enjoyed this slightly more if it were a little brighter and longer, but that is nit-picking. Some enjoyed this even more, with the wine meriting 99 JT points. From the same case as another bottle at a dinner three years that was ever-so-slightly better/ fresher.

Very dense and rich with lots of fully mature apple and baked apple. Enough brightening acidty keep this both fresh and unfolding on long finish. Only the 2nd time having this release, and i enjoyed it much more tonight vs last time (just after its "re-release" in 2012).

Lots of berry and apple here with superbly elegant and rounded textures. thrilled me...always wanting more feisty brightness. But that's Blanc de Noirs.

Dark color, but no oxidation worries this time. Floral aromas with sweet spice, mint and mature, ripe orchard fruit. Similar flavors stayed fresh for an hour+ in glass with so much density. This kept unfolding without getting tired. Best bottle of this wine I can ever recall.

Sweet spice with mature apple and pear on both nose and palate. Certainly still bright enough and alive, just somewhat lost after the stunning 1999.

A wine that has been frustratingly inconsistent, but tonight's bottle was excellent. Robust, powerful and certainly fresh with pear, poached pear, sweet spice, toasted almonds from start-to-finish with floral and mint hints. Rich and still complex. I really enjoyed this bottle, others enjoyed it even more (I believe it earned 97 JT points).

Lots of rich and ripe red and black cherry with earth and meat hints. Very good density and length, this is still so young and while there is also evident evolution, it is slightly less complex/ unfolding than I expect from the terroir in a great vintage at this age. Upside from here?

Black plum and currant with roasted meat and earth. Good+ weight and length. More than a little dirty, but not in a really negative way, with the barnyard notes adding some intriguing bretty character. A very Old School and honest wine.

Rich and somewhat simple expression of Cabernet Sauv, with some fun, horsey Cab Franc support notes. Well made and entertaining, but lacking a sense of density and complexity. Will that develop? Probably a little. Others enjoyed this more.

2002 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg
Late night. Red cherry and earth with good weight, but slightly more earth and dirt than I expect or recall from previous bottles, so seemingly less vibrant. still certainly enjoyable, just a little disappointing for Richebourg from a great vintage.

Mature apple and pear with good weight. Balanced power and evolved fruit well. Very good textures. Good now.

2000 Domaine A Pinot Noir Reserve du Patron
Very late night, served to me double blind. I thought it New World Syrah made in an Old world style. Mature black cherry on nose and palate with a more bitter edge than I expected from Pinot Noir. An enjoyable wine.
