Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
1998 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Réserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Somewhat muted nose. Generous in the mouth, with melon, flowers, gravel and minerals. Nice structure, long finish. Interesting, complex, vibrant wine. I would buy this, if it wasn't too expensive.
Red
1998 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône La Pialade France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
88 points
Light red in color, with red fruits on the nose. Soft and fruity on the palate. Some sage and black pepper hints. Low in tannins and ready to drink. Nice bistro wine.
Red
1998 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
90 points
Dark red in color, especially compared to the La Pialade. Fruits run more in the black spectrum. Good weight, nice balance, peppery finish, moderate tannins.
Red
1998 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Dark red in color. Ripe, rich fruits. Some hints of raw pepper steak. Structured, but the tannins are very fine.
Red
1998 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Dark red in color. Somewhat closed node. Cherry liquor, roasted plums and red raspberry on the palate, with a sweet, long, peppery finish. Fine grained tannins make this wine drinkable now, but it surely will get better. My only concern was a bit of alcoholic heat on the back end.
