Flight 1 - 2018 releases (4 notes)

White
2018 Villa Maria Chardonnay Private Bin New Zealand, North Island, East Coast
86 points
Peach, melon, toasty note, struck match, citrus candy. Nice, but a bit blah.
White
2018 Villa Maria Chardonnay Cellar Selection New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
89 points
Apricot, overripe peach, honey. Dessert like. Yum.

Much more ripe and sweeter than previous vintages as 2018 was warm. Will be a great 'drink now' Chardonnay on full release.
White
2018 Villa Maria Chardonnay Cellar Selection New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
87 points
Peach, nectarine, nutty, flinty, vanilla. Lots of acidity and a bit harsh now. Will be very good in time.
White
2018 Villa Maria Chardonnay Platinum Selection Sur Lie New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
85 points
Overripe stone fruit, toasty, nutty. Straining to be elegant, comes across as a little pretentious. Not my style.

Flight 2 - 2017 Reserve and Single Vineyards (4 notes)

White
2017 Villa Maria Chardonnay Reserve New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
91 points
Overripe white nectarine, peach, figs, creme brulee, clear and ripe citrus, pineapple. Exceptional.

White
2017 Villa Maria Chardonnay Reserve Barrique Fermented New Zealand, North Island, Gisborne
89 points
Pear, sweet lychee, ripe peach, green apple. Rich and vibrant but a little hollow in the middle. Needs time.
White
2017 Villa Maria Chardonnay Single Vineyard Ihumatao New Zealand, North Island, Auckland
92 points
Mineral and chalky, lychee, lemon and lime zest, clear mandarin. Always brilliant and unique. Most enjoyable wine of the flight.
White
2017 Villa Maria Chardonnay Single Vineyard Keltern New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
93 points
Straw, flint, lime, elegant and lifted stone fruits, lychee and a touch of baking spice. Incredible length, powerful. Best wine of the flight, but needs to be put away!

Closing

2017 wines were a tough, wet vintage with 2018 being much warmer - giving a wines ranging in complexity and ripeness. Of course the Reserve range was a big jump over the lesser wines but the Cellar Selection wines for 2018 demonstrate brilliant value and are unique to their other vintages. A great tasting.
