Monthly Men's Wine Dinner

2120 Restaurant, Seattle

Tasted December 9, 2019 by Quiet Lion with 114 views

Introduction

We had five men at our usual round corner table for this month's men's wine dinner -- actually November's dinner postponed. Food and service amazing as always. Wines bagged and served blind.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2010 Château Boswell Cabernet Sauvignon Jacquelynn Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
flawed
Decanted and served. Deep, full body marred by lots of brett. Although I found it undrinkable because of my sensitivity to brett, it was still the overwhelming WOTN because everyone else voted for it! In general I love these wines.
Red
2016 Efeste Cabernet Sauvignon Big Papa USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
93 points
Nose of berry marzipan. On the palate, nice round dark fruit and buoyant acid. I thought this was Italian but nope, another surprise from our ever-improving local wine industry. My #3 of 5 and the group's #2.
Red
2012 JM Cellars Merlot Louisa Margaret's Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
95 points
I don't know what winemakers have done to eliminate the bitter finish I've always hated in Merlots but lately I've been loving quite a few of them. Could be my palate has changed. This was singing with fine tannins, blackcurrant, licorice pastille, and long finish. My WOTN and the group's #3 of 5.
Red
2005 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
This was flawed with just a little brett but was still drinkable with chocolate, blackberry, and a full body. #4 of 5 for me and the group's #5.
Red
2013 Comstock Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
94 points
This showed round and balanced on the palate with medium+ body, red and blue fruit, mocha. My #2 of 5 and the group's #4.

Closing

Annoyingly there were two wines flawed with brett, which I am particularly sensitive to, but the others were delicious. My ranking:

1. 2012 JM Cellars Merlot Louisa Margaret's Vineyard ($43)
2. 2013 Comstock Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley ($58)
3. 2016 Efeste Cabernet Sauvignon Big Papa ($58)
4. 2005 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve ($85)

The group's ranking:
1. 2010 Château Boswell Cabernet Sauvignon Jacquelynn Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard ($184)
2. 2016 Efeste Cabernet Sauvignon Big Papa ($58)
3. 2012 JM Cellars Merlot Louisa Margaret's Vineyard ($43)
4. 2013 Comstock Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley ($58)
5. 2005 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve ($85)

Happy holidays everyone. Until next time...
