White
2017 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Aromas of grass, hay and grapefruits, and later some barnyard and cheesy funk. A rather similar profile on the palate. Fresh acids, and a little weight. A pretty simple example, and should be drunk fresh and quick

A promising, complex nose starting with ripe redcurrants, then a plume of barnyard funk, then the purple flowers show themselves later. There are high tannins and acids on the palate, but they seem to be pulling apart from each other. Also, the fruits seem muted, somewhat like a simple berry juice

2004 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Restrained aromas, bits of blackberry and grass, and slight meats. Nice acids, but the tannins seem to jar in, and seemingly affecting the flavours, showing muted fruits and somewhat grassy

2005 Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Pronounced earth, funk, fungal, cigar aromas. The cigar and funk presses on to the palate and it’s so persistent. Acids are still high and fresh, while tannins are pretty chewy. A really long finish, still with the earth funk and cigar. At first, I thought I could not detect fruits on this, but it shows up as blackberry and also some lillies further back. Good terroir expression

There was this certain maple syrupy feel on both the nose and palate. Also, it seems like there are a lot of raisins, so strong that it seemed to have masked any other potential flavours. Took some time in the glass to blow off the raisins, to finally show the nuances of tree bark, grass and undergrowth. That was a good development, but I still cannot overlook that stage where the raisins overpowered everything else

2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Aromas of raisins, blackberry, grass, and tree bark, and stewed meat. Also similar meaty expressions on the palate, whilst with some mouthwatering acids and tannins already softened, while the body was kind of light. Seems like it’s too old already, could probably have been better years ago

2009 Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Auguste Favier France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A large bouquet, as if fresh flowers plucked from the fields, cherry, and leaves. We can get roses, blackberry, and peppercorns on the palate, with a good tannic structure and fresh acids. A pretty well made one

Punchy aromas, that of blackberry, pepper, grass, dried roses, and a blast of herbs. Fairly acidic, tannic, and quite some flavours of cassis, grass, pepper, and green herbs. The herbal feel persisted into a fairly long finish, with the cassis fruits appearing intermittently in between. Great!
