Steak and Syrah Night
Tuscany Steakhouse
Tasted February 26, 2020 by SMHalps with 160 views
Introduction
A Steak and Syrah tasting with my wine group at a NYC Italian Steakhouse. All the wines were opened, for at least 30 minutes and up to 90 minutes before pouring, depending on where in the sequence a wine was poured.
We had in order...the lone white of the evening, "2016 Castello della Sala Cervaro, followed by, 2007 Martinelli Gravel Lens Hop Camp, 2004 Clarendon Hills Moritz, 2009 Deumani Suisassi, 2012 Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier L Block, 2015 Paul Jaboulet Aine Les Grandes Terrasses, 2015 The Farm Winery Red Zone, and the 2015 Myriad Sangiacomo. The Farm and the Paul Jaboulet were the only ones decanted.

Flight 2 (7 notes)
Red
2007 Martinelli Syrah Gravel Lens Hop Camp Vineyard
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
My final bottle of this vintage. Opened, but not decanted, for about 30 minutes before pouring. Time has been kind to this bottle. I have generally been disappointed in Martinelli's Syrahs. But this was very tasty. Complex, medium bodied, with a medium length finish. I had a second glass near the end of the night and had improved a bit over two hours.
Red
2004 Clarendon Hills Syrah Moritz
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
Part of a Syrah night with my wine group, and the only wine that didn't come from my collection. It was purchased at auction. Opened, but not decanted. Right from the get go, the nose was odd. I don't know if it was corked, but there was an unpleasant barnyard or forest floor aroma. The taste was fine, overwhelming amounts of red raspberry, with little other notes. It was hard to drink with the nose being what it was.
Red
2009 Duemani Syrah Costa Toscana Suisassi
Italy, Tuscany, Costa Toscana
Opened, but not decanted for about 45 minutes before pouring. Rich, smooth, and more like a Northern Rhone Syrah, than a CA or AU wine. Very enjoyable. Prior bottles felt very full bodied, but this one felt more mid weight.
Red
2012 Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz L Block
Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Pyrenees
Part of a Syrah night with my wine group, it was opened, but not decanted, for over 45 minutes before pouring. A big hit with my wine group. Ripe fruit, and it just feels like an AU Shiraz. If it was just me, I'd call it a 89/90 point wine, but since the rest of my group loved it, and if they were rating it, they would say 92/93, I'll go with 91.
Red
2015 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Cornas Les Grandes Terrasses
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Opened, and decanted, for about 45 minutes, before pouring. This might have been the group WOTN. Complex, not overly fruit driven, notes of pepper, and plum. Medium bodied, with a long finish.
Red
2014 The Farm Winery Syrah The Red Zone
USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District
My only bottle of this cuvee from the Farm. Opened and decanted for over 45 minutes before pouring. A crowd pleasing effort. Full bodied, lots of CA fruit, and a long finish. Much better than WA's 89 point rating would have me believe. We had 7 Syrahs and this was probably our 2nd favorite.
Red
2015 Myriad Cellars Syrah Sangiacomo Vineyard
USA, California, Sonoma County, Petaluma Gap
Part of a Syrah tasting with my wine group. It was opened, but not decanted, for over an hour before we poured. As the last of 7 red wines, the food was gone, and some of us never took more than a sip of it. Which was too bad, as its a tasty, full bodied CA Syrah. Those of us who drank it, enjoyed it.
Closing
This was a lot of fun. The group WOTN was the Jaboulet, followed by the Farm Red Zone. Was it a cooincedence that the favorites were the only 2 decanted? I'm not sure. All the wines were greatly enjoyed, with the exception of the Clarendon Hills. And they all went very well with the steaks!
