Flight 1 (6 notes)
Red
1970 Château Canon
Medium ruby color, this was fresh and firm with a solid core of polished red fruits, spice, with a supple mouthfeel and fully resolved tannin. Nice but drink up.
Red
1970 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
Timid at first, this came alive after about 20 minutes open. Tea, earth, blue fruits in spades, once the nose came alive there was a lot to like here. 2nd favorite bottle today.
Red
1971 Les Forts de Latour
Amazingly fresh, chock full of cedar, black currant, cassis with a mouthfeel that wouldn't quit. Kept improving over an hour after opening, a big surprise as one of the highlights, personal favorite bottle today.
Red
1975 Château Latour Grand Vin
Smoke, dried tobacco, herbs on the nose, the palate with supple black plum tobacco, baking spice. Good mouthfeel but felt like it was still holding back yet.. this was deep and not giving today, probably needed more air as the substance was clearly there. Tasted over ~45 minutes so was brief.
Red
1978 Château Montrose
A distinctly fresh green / herbal nose, among the lighter bodied wines today. Fully mature and very good after about 90 minutes open.
Red
1978 Château La Lagune
Medium garnet color and from presumably good storage, but fruit had faded and what's left wasn't enough to be compelling. Not spoiled but over the hill.
Closing
All solid wines, but the biggest surprise by far was how excellent '71 Les Forts de Latour showed today.
