Introduction
A week in La Morra
Flight 1 - Ciabot Berton (12 notes)
Splendid tasting with the Oberto family. Some of the best value Barolo there is. Super performance in 2015 and 2016.
Rosé
2020 Ciabot Berton Langhe Rosato Le Macaline
85 points
Red fruit, cranberry, strawberry, slightly medicinal, pine perhaps? Tart and dry in the mouth, a hint of tannin. Very refreshing.
White
2019 Ciabot Berton Langhe Favorita Alissa
85 points
White peach, almond, honeysuckle, an attractive smell. Light and fresh in the mouth, not a huge concentration but not dilute. Sufficient acid and a bitter almond finish.
Red
2019 Ciabot Berton Dolcetto d'Alba Rutuin
86 points
Translucent purple rim, very dark for Dolcetto. Highly concentrated smell, so pretty, cherry, almond, amaretto. A whack of bitter herbs in the mouth and substantial tannin. Concentrated but never heavy. Medium bodied. Refreshing long finish.
Red
2020 Ciabot Berton Barbera d'Alba Fisetta
85 points
Fresh fruit smell, cherry, plum, a touch of leafy green herbs. Meduim bodied zingy fruit acid, dusty and grainy tannin. Everything in place but comes a bit short on the finish. Good.
Red
2018 Ciabot Berton Barbera d'Alba Bricco San Biagio
88 points
Vanilla, sweet ripe fruit, super concentrated, plum, also very floral. Jewel like boiled sweet smell. Meduim to full bodied, sappy acid and polished tannin. Very long finish. Excellent.
Red
2019 Ciabot Berton Langhe Nebbiolo 3 Utin
86 points
Pale translucent appearance. Sweet fruit, cinnamon spice, violets. Light bodied and high acid. Crunchy crisp tannin, ethereal weight on the palate. A great user friendly Nebbiolo.
Red
2016 Ciabot Berton Barolo Comune di La Morra
90 points
Wonderful smell, violet and rose, high toned red fruit, some blackberry and raspberry. Manages the trick of having a concentrated flavour and satisfying mouthfeel without being heavy. Supple polished tannin. A interesting lighter expression of Barolo.
Red
2015 Ciabot Berton Barolo 1961
88 points
Acetone, dark fruit, muscular. Slightly meaty smell with some herbs. Strong drying tannin quite crunchy and coarse. Short on the finish. I struggled a bit with this, perhaps it needed more air or time in bottle.
Red
2015 Ciabot Berton Barolo Rocchettevino
92 points
Expressive smell, floral, sort of dried flowers with raspberry and other red berry fruits. Black tea. A hit of harsh tannin immediately on the palate then it unfurls to show structured mouthfilling fruit and fades gracefully into a supple floral flourish. Wonderful.

Red
2016 Ciabot Berton Barolo Rocchettevino
92 points
Distinctly different from the 2015, this shows cinnamon spice, floral. Some iron or stony mineral. High acid, bright and slightly tangy in the mouth. Very supple and polished in the mouth, shows red fruit, strawberry perhaps. Excellent long finish. This needs both more time open and more time in bottle. Superb.

Red
2015 Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri
89 points
Earthy undergrowth, dark fruit and muscle. Spice but in the background. Broad brooding tannin and a bit muddy. Still a satisfying mouthful with a long finish.
Red
2016 Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri
92 points
Dark fruit, spice, very earthy to smell but shows some lovely raspberry and blackberry too. Powerful and persistent broad tannins in the mouth, but silky and supple still. A complex wine. Long finish. Everything here in spades. One for the cellar.

Flight 2 - Mario Marengo (3 notes)
Due to their success sadly sold out of Barbera and Nebbiolo d'Alba. Good to excellent 2017 but all need more time.
Red
2017 M. Marengo Barolo
90 points
Attractive smell, dried flower, some hot stones. Warm and alcoholic in the mouth, refreshing acid but firm tannin, nevertheless everything in balance and quite approachable. Excellent.
Red
2017 M. Marengo Barolo Bricco delle Viole
91 points
Pale translucent purple, no orange yet. Muted nose but identifiable raspberry and dried flowers, some rose. Crunchy and substantial tannin. Medium bodied and surprisingly high acid. Darker fruited than the previous vintages. Very good but needs more time.
Red
2017 M. Marengo Barolo Brunate
91 points
Dark fruit, liquorice, earthy mineral. Dark and deep with a lick of oak. Elegant mouthfeel initially followed by crisp tannin. Substantial structure, approaching full bodied. Perhaps a touch muddy and undefined at the moment. Nevertheless plenty of potential.
Flight 3 - Miscellaneous Notes (5 notes)
A few odd purchases and restaurant buys.
Red
2015 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello
90 points
Dark plum smell, rich and brooding. Liquorice and tar. Powerful in the mouth, slightly metallic iron note. Lots of structure. Just about drinkable already but young. Very good.

2019 Andrea Oberto Barbera d'Alba
88 points
Bright fruit smell, black cherry, some sage. Medium body, relatively low tannin, no oak but good concentration. Lovely tangy fruit acid, clean fresh finish. Archetypal unoaked Barbera.
Red
2017 Carlo Giacosa Barbaresco Narin
89 points
Orange peel, dark fruit, plum. Big and muscular in the mouth, sappy fruit acid. Coarse tannin, some iron with it. Long finish with some mineral components.
Red
2014 Domaine Chevalier Corton-Rognet
90 points
Lovely smell, fruit forward blackberry, some earthy smells and a hint of farmyard. Light in the mouth, very supple. Some power in the mouth, but a touch thin for a grand cru. Nevertheless enjoyable.
