Introduction

Four of us got together to drink a few bottles of Bordeaux.

Flight 1 - Champagne (2 notes)

NV 168 is starting to show maturity.

White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
97 points
Perfectly mature nose displaying concentrated sweet yellow fruit, lemon curd, candied lemon peel, apple, dry orange peel, burnt sugar, ginger candy, smoke, oyster shell, cedar and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layer of concentrated yellow fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich and deeply toned but also precise and beautifully balanced, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with brioche and smoke at the end. Having concentrated fruit, this can easily improve for a decade or more. Another excellent and consistent showing.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Édition 168ème France, Champagne
95 points
Beautifully mature complex nose displaying sweet white and yellow fruit, apple, baked apple, lemon curd, marzipan, a hint of sherry, burnt sugar, oyster shell, brioche and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated white and yellow fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich but nicely balanced, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long ripe white and yellow fruit driven finish. The oxidative note and marzipan reminds me Selosse initial a bit. Now that initial is trading above $300, this represents a much better option for me. Very complete champagne.

Flight 2 - Pavillon Blanc (1 note)

It is pretty rich. It is hard to believe that this is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

White
2006 Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux France, Bordeaux
95 points
Beautiful fully mature nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, dry pineapple, peach, honey, strong lanoline, butterscotch, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of sweet yellow fruit, dense and rich, bright acidity and mineral, and a seamless long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with butterscotch and lanoline at the end. There is no grassy note. This has developed beautifully. No need to rush but not sure if it will improve.

Flight 3 - Ausone (1 note)

Upper shoulder fill. Really well cellared bottle showing generous fruit.

Red
1961 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
97 points
Initially a hint of brett/band aid that blows off. Fully mature nose displaying generous sweet black fruit, blackberry, a hint of black cherry, fresh porcini, white truffle, caramel, cedar, a hint of rose and earth. Excellent concentration, generous sweet black fruit, silky, perfect amount of acidity, earthy mineral, and a seamless long black fruit driven finish with truffle and cedar at the end. Very fresh example, excellent showing.

Flight 4 - 1990 Bordeaux (2 notes)

IMO, the 90 Leoville Poyferre is one of the top wines of the vintage.

Red
1990 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
flawed
Corked.

1990 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
98 points
Perfectly mature nose displaying incredibly sweet red fruit with a hint of black, strawberry, plum, a hint of cassis, caramel, dark milk chocolate, cedar, lead pencil, dark spices and earth. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered sweet red fruit, silky, warm and round, medium acidity and mineral, and a seamless long sweet red fruit driven finish with lead pencil and caramel at the end. This is clearly more developed than the 90 Lynch Bages but that is a good thing. Drinking exceptional well, My WOTN.

Flight 5 - Bordeaux (2 notes)

The 09 VCC is a bit shutdown but the palate is incredibly silky.

Red
2009 Vieux Château Certan France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
96 points
Incredibly youthful medium expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe black fruit blackberry, blackberry liquor, ink, lavender, bitter chocolate and limestone. Excellent concentration, slightly coiled black fruit, silky and weightless, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral, noticeable fine tannins, and a long perfectly ripe concentrated black fruit driven finish with a hint of ink at the end. It seems a bit shutdown as the fruit is not too expressive. Nevertheless the palate is unbelievably silky. It will need another decade or more to really open up.

Red
1990 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Incredibly youthful expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe black fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry concentrate, ink, licorice, ash, lead pencil, cedar, leather and earth. Once again, it display the 90 ripeness but also a hint of green. Excellent concentration, very finely layered concentrated black fruit, intense yet silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, fine silky tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with ash and mint at the end. IMO, Leoville Las Cases and Lynch Bages age the slowest even more so than Latour. The 90 Lynch Bages is at least a decade young than the 90 Leoville Poyferre but that is not necessarily a good thing. IMO, Lynch Bages has a unique expression, pronounce ash, cassis and ink and always displays impressive concentrated. I however find them a bit straightforward. This can easily transform for a couple more decades.
