Introduction

We all brought some wines and tasted them blind.

Flight 1 (12 notes)

White - Sparkling
2013 Reichsrat Von Buhl Riesling Sekt Brut Germany, Pfalz
91 points
Concentrated and tasty bubble. Slightly oxidized style. Broad. Firm citrus and grapefruit bitterness in the finish. A mouth full. 90 – 91
White
2010 Veyder-Malberg Riesling Vießlinger Ried Bruck Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
93 points
Bouquet with ripe yellow fruits, some honey and rustic flavors. On the palate a concentrated wine with white fruits, a lot of minerals, gun powder, spices, a touch of sweetness and also firm acidity and grapefruit bitterness in the long finish. Not really tight and focused, but a broad, full bodied and lush, quite special wine. 92 – 93
White
2007 Reichsrat Von Buhl Forster Pechstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Pfalz
91 points
In the bouquet ripe yellow fruits, melon and litchi as well as minerals and some petrol. On the palate quite focused with white fruits, minerals, good acidity and a touch of sweetness. Good concentration. Tasty and elegant wine.
White
2001 Van Volxem Scharzhofberger Riesling Pergentsknopp Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Caramel, butterscotch and some petrol in the bouquet. Same impressions on the palate. Some butter candy, polishing wax and sweetness. Very ripe and mature. A bit too old? No score.
Red
2003 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Much darker in color than you expect from a Nebbiolo. Concentrated bouquet with dark berry fruits, earth, licorice, autumn forest, some tobacco and good oak. On the palate a somewhat sweet start with ripe dark forest fruits, some red fruits as well, herbs and spices, good acidity, drying tannin and a firm amount of bitterness. Day 2 the wine had gained quite much. More in balance. Still beautifully concentrated and the dark fruits dominated, beautiful sweet spices and lovely oak. More friendly tannin. I should keep my last bottle until well into the 2020’s. Not before 2022. I scored the wine 92+ on day one, but day 2 it was definitely 93+.

1997 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
95 points
Beautiful and mature bouquet with soft fruits, smoke, sweet spices, chocolate and just a tiny bit of pleasant barnyard. On the palate soft red fruits as well, a lot of sweet spices, some menthol, smoke, beautiful oak, beautiful acidity and smooth powdery tannin with still a pleasant and soft bite. All is in perfect harmony and balance now. A delicious wine. Drink now and the next few years.

1997 Etude Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Concentrated bouquet with a lot of ripe dark forest fruits, and licorice. On the palate dark berries and licorice as well, some sweetness, sweet spices, a firm amount of good acidity and round, slightly sticky tannin. Full bodied and still youthful. Early maturity now and if stored properly it will probably last until 2022 at least.
Red
2004 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
The bouquet of this bottle was not extremely expressive, but definitely refined and elegant with ripe dark forest fruits, sweet spices and licorice. On the palate juicy and ripe dark forest fruits, a touch of sweetness, chocolate, smoke and tar. Good acidity. Round and somewhat drying tannin. Still youthful. Classical wine that most likely would have been better with some more air time. Probably wise to give it another 4 – 6 years of cellaring. 91 – 92+ for tonight.

1995 Château Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
I owned only one bottle and I am really happy I opened it today. The bouquet is beautifully complex with dark fruits, some cigar (box), smoke, a bit earth, and rustic in a very pleasant way. On the palate mostly red, but also dark berries, a bit rustic with pleasant acidity and soft, powdery tannin. Elegant, complex, harmonious and beautiful! Day 2 the wine was still lovely, but some lovage/celery showed as well. This wine is completely ready now. Stored in a good cellar it will probably stay nice until 2020 or a bit longer, but until 2055 as it is in Cellartracker now is ridiculous. 93-94

2006 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Tintot France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
A 100% Mourvedre from Southern Rhône. Beautiful and concentrated bouquet with dark forest fruits and some kirsch. On the palate dark fruits as well, licorice, animals, tar and asphalt. Good acidity and firm tannin with a pleasant bite. Early maturity now. Will probably improve over the next 3+ years. No problem cellaring this until 2020+. 92+ for tonight.

2006 Clos Mogador Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
93 points
Beautiful herbs and spices, red fruits and some smoke in the bouquet. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, good herbs, sweet spices beautiful acidity and soft tannin. During the evening the wine improves. Day two the wine did not show serious ageing, but some chocolate appeared as well. Overall very accessible and supple. The wine is ready now and in its early maturity stage. Will drink lovely from now until in the first few years of the 2020's
