Flight 2 - Lightly Grilled Fresh Hokkaido Scallops & Saled (1 note)

White
2006 Remoissenet Père et Fils Le Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Xmas lunch - Honey gold. Subtle suede leather and white shoe cream nose… really subtle and rounded. Quite reverberant even on the nose…. mounting rolling thunder. Palate is very smoky, pebbles, riverbed schist. Superb length. A joy. 94+

Flight 3 - Roast 'Dinde' with Duck Fat Roasted Potatoes, Home-made Chestnut Stuffing, Fresh Cranberry Sauce, Grilled Cauliflower with Rosemary & Aged Parmesan, Garden Carrots, Brussel Sprouts with PancettaSprouts (2 notes)

We had our traditional Savoie, farm-raised organic Turkey flown in from France together with all the trimmings.

Red
2006 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
95 points
On opening - Really impressively high quality cork, untouched by the wine except for the underside. Reddish-purple colour. Translucent. Slight sediment. Immediate nose of blueberries and tomato vine, anthracite, cold bitchumen and green peppercorn. Palate is very bitter 95% cocoa black chocolate, cold black tea, very bitter dried black Chinese medicine ingredients, gall bladder.

Xmas lunch - After overnight double decant....jeez, this is a stunner… stops you in your tracks. Tons of mellow fruit and a lot of complexity. Everyone loved this. 95

It remains in Runny's and my top place from some 20 wines we investigated as contenders for "The Next Grange?" 13-14 years ago. Hold.

Xmas lunch - Cork broke at bottom but intact. Transparent autumnal plum colour. Nose is black leather shoes that are showing decades of shoe shine. Palate still shows good fruit but in the older cranberries spectrum. Some damp fern and moss. Good tannic structure still. Lovely richness of fruit still. Big complexity of palate. Head expanding, multi-layered and long finish. My last bottle of a case and just the right time to drink it up before it likely declines at an accelerated rate. 92?

Flight 4 - 'Frere Marchand' French Artisanal Cheeses (1 note)

Epoisses, St. Marcellin, Chevre.......

Red
1991 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Xmas lunch - Decanted for 8 hours. Strangely, no notes....but this was beautiful and confirmed my view that 1991 is possibly the finest vintage of Ch. Musar apart from the near-impossible to find 1959. Fortunately, I still have a case of this and will remember to write a detailed note next time!

Flight 5 - Marks & Spencer 'Premium' Christmas Pudding (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

My first from two cases of 12x75cl bought on release. Decanted for several hours. Totally fresh cork. Beautiful bright yellow gold. Nose of light manuka honey. Palate is rich multiple layers… unctuous. Broad in the mouth. Huge complexity and wonderful long resonance/ reverberance on the finale. This is already a beauty but has a massively long life ahead of it. I'll drink a few more this coming year to savour its youthful freshness and in case it closes down for a while after that. 94-95

The first wines opened from my cellar, indeed alcohol drank, in 5 months so I was really looking forward to this and I wasn't disappointed.....Merry Christmas!
