Chambolle night

Tasted March 31, 2022 by melvinyeowq with 232 views

Introduction

Chambolle theme. There was a leitmotif of a sweetness of fruit among the wines, not sure if it was by coincidence due to the vintages and producers on the night or something that is inherent in Chambolles.

Brought this as an extra as I wanted to share this wonderful producer with others, and it didn't disappoint. A delicate red-fruited and lifted nose, on the palate it was light and elegant with a little more dark fruit. Everyone called this as a village correctly, but even though it was simple and unpretentious, I enjoyed it the most after the Fourrier. Probably the most Chambolle of them all tonight.

Would have struggled to place this as Burgundy, never mind Chambolle. Vanilla and a cherry cola note on the nose, on the palate it was slightly sweet and very ripe. Everyone thought that this was a 15 or 18. Not the biggest fan of Duband wines, and my least favourite of the night.

2010 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Seemed a little advanced for the age based on appearance, and the tannins were also pretty much resolved to give a very soft wine. However, the fruit was very vibrant so I thought it was a strong vintage along the lines of 2002. Slightly sweet and candied fruit on the finish.

My main bottle for the night. I want to like Bertheau wines as theoretically they are up my wheelhouse, but those that I have had seemed too young and coiled up, or advanced after around ten years of age.

This had a brighter ruby appearance compared to the 2010, but wasn't giving much until a couple of hours later. More attractive, structured and red-fruited compared to the 2010, but had a similar sweet finish and felt a little more modern. On the second day the colour became more advanced and tasted very similar to the 2010.

2009 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

This felt weightier and black-fruited than the Gevrey village that I tried last year, which had the classic Fourrier red fruit. Nevertheless this was very lovely and had a silky texture that suggested a good producer. Was quite understated so I felt that this was from a cool vintage, was quite surprised that it turned out to be a 2009. An extremely classy wine and my favourite of the night.

Pleasurable and hedonistic wine with very sweet red fruit and heavy oak influence of vanilla on the nose. A little over ripe for me and lacking in intensity and freshness.

An assortment of wines before and after.

White
2007 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

A tiny sample of leftovers from a generous friend, was commenting that GC whites have a clear step up in terms of concentration and weight compared to 1ers based on my limited experience. This proved to be the case here - an absolute powerhouse of a wine with some secondary development, but still with a long way to go (barring premox). Very impressive finish.
White
2019 Agnès et René Mosse Savennières Arena France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Made in a natural style, not very precise even though it was clean. Some heat on the finish. Everyone managed to correctly guess Chenin for this.
White
2019 Kistler Chardonnay Les Noisetiers USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
A complete doppelganger for a Burgundy at first, most of us guessed Meursault for this. The oak gave a rich wine and a darker colour that made it seem older than it was. Still had ample acidity to give a balanced wine that was very drinkable. Better on pop-and-pour as the alcohol started showing after a couple of hours.

2014 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Château de la Maltroye Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Leftover sample from previous day. Bright red fruits, tannins are quite refined for a Chassagne with no rusticity at all. Good structure, still very youthful.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Rather soft and the alcohol really dominated here. Marmalade, jasmine and some tea-like tannins. Some spice and heat on the finish.
