Il Caberlot Vertical at Summa 2022

Weingut Alois Lageder, Margreid, South Tyrol

Tasted April 10, 2022 by Eric Becker with 145 views

Introduction

Moritz and Carla-Elle Rogosky and Marco Maffei from Podere Il Carnasciale hosted this tasting to celebrate thirty years of their flagship wine Il Caberlot.

The wines were served from double-magnums, which probably contributed to their impression of youth.

These are serious wines, build around a good tannic backbone and healthy acidity. While ripely fruited and powerful, they are dry, show a beautiful overall restraint and occasionally a touch of rusticity. I am thoroughly impressed, not the least by their moderate alcohol, which does not exceed 13,5%.

Shows more aromatic development on the nose than the younger vintages with earth and mushrooms, which are wrapped around the core of sweet dark fruits. Some bellpepper and grassy notes add to the complexity. In the mouth the wine feels still young with freshness, intensity and a strong, rather austere finish. From double-magnum it should keep for at least 6-7 years.

Compared to the 2001 there is more sweetness on the nose and on the palate. However, the fruit does not come without some bellpepper and grassy notes, too. In the mouth the wine is more rounded and feels a bit more "right bank". Structured and with some hardness on the finish.

Probably the wine with the highest potential. Ripe blackberry fruit, slightly liqueured, some balsamic notes, hardly grassy. In the mouth ripely fruited and powerful, yet still rather closed and dry on the finish. In double-magnum probably three years away from maturity. Very good potential.

My favourite wine of the tasting. Feels equally sweet as the 2010 but more red-fruited and that blends very harmoniously into the slightly herbal notes of the wine. Delicious and really quite distinctive. Finer boned than the 2010, but also creamy and long. A great wine, which should unlock some upside with three more years in the cellar.

Quite difficult to assess as this vintage feels very youthful and not fully formed yet. Certainly ripely dark-fruited, but also spicy and sweaty on the nose. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied and juicy, however, it turns a little tart and quickly closes up on the finish. The probabilities for another strong vintage seem high to me.
