Introduction

Jan was back in town for a visit, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to get together and have a little wine and great food.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Mignon Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Comte de Marne France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
93 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This bottle, cellared since 2018, was just lovely tonight and right in my wheelhouse. Pitch perfect, full bodied yet so clean and polished while remaining light on its feet and bright; toasted, pear chiffon, almond, stones and light chalk, brioche, long and lifted. Super.

Rosé - Sparkling
2009 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage Rosé France, Champagne
90 points
Pale blood orange color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Strawberry, cherry, anise, and a slightly sweet floral note on the nose. The palate shows cherry, citrus, light, chalk. Good, but would expect a bit more here. 89+ to 90pts.
White
2009 Ramey Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Well this is drinking about as well as it ever has. Pear, pineapple, full bodied and rich, but bright with great acidity, white flowers, apple butter, lemon, oily texture, honey, melded oak, pretty spice and a long finish. Last bottle, going out strong with no sign of fading.
Red
2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
96 points
Medium red color with a 7mm bricked edge. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Jan's bottle and another gem of White Rose. Another incredible nose, sanguine, funk, roses, pencil, leather, cherry, berry, dried earth, hints of cranberry, dried herbs. The palate is right there too, medium bodied, raspberry, red currants, a touch of cranberry splendid acidity, ground tobacco, leather, floral, exotic dried spice, plump round tannins, and amazing length. This is so complex and lifted, just heavenly. 96+ to 97pts.

Red
1998 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
92 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 2 hours plus. Deeply earthy and minerally, brooding fruits of black raspberry and black cherry, olive, a little vegetal note. The palate is a mix of dark fruits, iron and minerals, underbrush, woodsy spice, firm and rustic tannins. This is old school, well structured and sturdy. 91+ to 92pts.
Red
2005 Faiveley Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
91 points
Dark red color. Decanted for 45 minutes, drank a glass over 2 hours plus. Very high toned and floral nose, mineral dense, anise, wood spice, very brisk tannins, rustic, and still backwards. 90+ to 91pts.
Red
1993 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Very dark red color, 5mm transition to clear. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Just a lovely LB from '93, pretty, well integrated, bountiful lead pencil, cassis, and dried forest floor note. I so love these underrated vintages with a healthy bit of age.

Red
2009 Joseph Phelps Insignia USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 90 minutes. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Lots of big dark fruit on the nose, plenty of oak and wood notes, a little creosote as well. The palate had more going for it right now, not as tight as the nose was; cassis, tar, blackberry liqueur, creosote, fine brooding tannins. I was looking forward to the opportunity to try this and see where it was at; it certainly is good at this point, but still very primary and not delivering on its expected pedigree presently. I'm hoping it follows the trajectory of older incarnations of Insignia and evolves further. 91+ to 92pts.

Red
2001 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Medium red color. PNP, followed for an hour. A wicked bottle; over ripe, over done. Strong garrigue and even stronger pepper, pruny faded fruit, not holding up and not really unexpectedly so. Really quite the mess that I don't think anyone wanted to drink. To be fair, it is possible this was heat damaged as we don't know the provenance of the bottle, and I believe it was a bottle acquired through Wine Bid. The CT drinking window of '08 to '17 was probably pretty accurate though. No score.

Red
2017 J.L. Chave Sélection Crozes-Hermitage Silène France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
89 points
Very dark red color with a purple hue. Decanted for 2 hours. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. Fairly green on the nose and palate, sappy dark berries and plum, chocolate, vanilla. May get a bit better over another couple years.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Deep gold color. Drank a small glass over 45 minutes. Sweet and really ripe fruits, tangerine, apricot, pineapple, oily and unctuous, full bodied, orange peel, rich and heavy compared to previous bottles. This bottle was good but lacked the freshness and energy of many others.
