Introduction

A look at GSM in Australia with a Chateauneuf du Pape thrown in

Flight 1 - Torbreck (2 notes)

Red
2002 Torbreck Juveniles Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
85 points
Grenache (60%), Shiraz (20%) and Mataro (20%); this wine shows some development with ripe strawberry, bing cherry and red plum but equally molasses and balsamic tones. Medium to light bodied the wine has a syrupy texture with rather shapeless tannins and a warm generous spike of alcohol. Short to medium finish.
Red
2006 Torbreck The Steading Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
88 points
Grenache (60%), Shiraz (20%) & Mataro (20%); A wonderfully perfumed intense nose redolent of violets, red fruit along with hung meat, worn leather Mourvedre edge. More body than the Juveniles, the wine has a rich, sumptuous texture, delivering complexity and multilayered fruits and underscored by lively acidity. The older barrels add a little spice and tilled soil that add to the complexity. Fair length too. Tannins seemed a little protruding.

Flight 2 - GSM Aus versus Rhone (3 notes)

Red
1999 Tim Adams The Fergus Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
flawed
Sadly the wine was badly corked so little here at all.
Red
1999 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
85 points
A far more savoury affair and showing some age, the wine had that initial burst of garrigue, dried herbs and spice but on the palate seemed to have a linseed oil quality leading to a rather syrupy texture that didn't appeal. Whilst soft with some complex elements, the tannins seemed sinewy and overall the wine seemed a little too mature even at 6-7 years old. Given the higher ratings, this may have been a slightly compromised bottle?
Red
2002 Mt. Billy Harmony GSM Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
89 points
Shiraz-led blend with Mataro, the wine is showing nature elements with leather, and marmite alongside freshly hung meat, strawberry and liquorice. Very much savoury in style rather than bold, the wine retains an element of fruit with black and red plums joining the strawberry, a hint of cigar box and a long length.

Flight 3 - Spinifex mini-vertical (3 notes)

Red
2002 Spinifex Esprit Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
89 points
An odd nose with oyster shell, liquorice, plastic oros bottle, damp wood and some charry toasty elements.
A soft entry with lively acidity, there is a sweetness to the mid-palate that feels syrupy and with flavours of candy floss and treacle. Still reasonably long in the mouth, high warming alcohol. Feels slightly baked.
Red
2003 Spinifex Esprit Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
88 points
Grenache-led, the entry combines sweet treacle notes, strawberry and black pepper with a savoury, meaty and liquorice side. Soft and silky in texture balanced with lively acid, the wine has a spicy note with strawberry doused in crushed peppercorns and sinewy tannins that builds, giving a dryness to the aftertaste. Fairly good length.
Red
2004 Spinifex Esprit Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
80 points
Again Grenache-led (just) alongside Shiraz, Mataro and Cinsaut. Sadly, there is a volatile character that pervades the whole wine. Rather jammy with strawberry jam the main component, black pepper and some earthy notes. Possible bottle issue and evolved.

Flight 4 - 2004 GSM Various (4 notes)

Red
2004 Spinifex Indigène Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
87 points
Mataro led with Shiraz; the bouquet penetrates with brambles, tobacco, spice and roasted meat. A voluptuous mouthfeel packed with fruit, slightly wild and fairly spice-driven. The tannins are still relatively fresh and grippy and the length is long with a sawdust, meaty stew element on the aftertaste.
Red
2004 Massena The Moonlight Run Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
86 points
Grenache-led with aromas of spice, oak nuances and liquorice, yet there is a lingering VA. Underneath pokes some blue and black fruits. Fairly intense the entry is smooth with good complexity bilberry and blackberry. Smooth textured, there is good length even though the VA knocks it a little.
Red
2004 Henschke Johann's Garden Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
88 points
An intense nose of cigar smoke, brambles, tinned strawberry, ashtray and black raspberry.
The entry is round and broad with a syrupy texture yet seems to possess a buoyancy from a lively, slightly mineral acidity. Even the warm spiky alcohol do not deter from what is a nicely delineated wine with flavours of strawberry, peppery and spice cake, even a pinch of vanilla pod. Medium to long finish.
Red
2005 S.C. Pannell Shiraz/Grenache Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
88 points
Shiraz 55%; Grenache 45%; deep purple colour, the nose shows super ripe black and red fruit that veers to jam. Flecks of toast and vanilla also show.
Medium-bodied, the entry is rich in texture, fairly big and bold with notes of chocolate, liquorice, spices and a lifted perfume throughout. There was quite a hefty extract with grippy tannins and a warm geneorus alcohol and the finish felt a little soupy. Fairly long and it grew on me.
