Introduction

BYO plus a taste through of some older vintage of Lail Vineyards. Nice to get the group together - has been some time.

Flight 1 (15 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru VP France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
This was really great. Nice hint of age to it which made it almost a hint funky but in that good way. A bit sweet and sour. Some oxidation. Interesting.
White - Sparkling
2008 Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Millésime France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Still very young and a bit more closed down than the Egly was. It's enjoyable, but would give it more time.
White
2017 Lail Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Georgia USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville
Surprised me how much I like it. The winemaker had pushed to do an SB back in the day and apparently had spent some time at HB. This wasn't that wine, but there is a lovely honey character to the wine and a lightness while still having a decent mouthful to it. Enjoyable.

White - Off-dry
2010 François Chidaine Vouvray Le Bouchet France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
From a magnum. Drinking well. Round and unctuous but with that chenin crispness towards the end. It was enjoyable.
Red
2008 Lail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon J. Daniel Cuvée USA, California, Napa Valley
My favorite from a long term perspective across all of the vintages and I think most ppl in the group's favorite as well. These were opened around 5:30 pm and we probably got to drinking then around 7 pm. This just kept opening in the glass becoming very much like a fig jam by the end. Hints of spice. Drinking nicely but really needs a lot more time.
Red
2006 Lail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon J. Daniel Cuvée USA, California, Napa Valley
This one came across as a bit hotter than some of the others. Bigger wine. It was more typical of a Napa cab from this time to me. A bit more fruity. A hint stewed.
Red
2004 Lail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon J. Daniel Cuvée USA, California, Napa Valley
Young and closed down and at this point mostly showing the fruit but not as much else. Wonder what it would be like with some more time.

2002 Lail Vineyards J. Daniel Cuvée USA, California, Napa Valley
This is the best of the group to drink today. Most integrated and the only one that is close to getting some secondary notes. Well balanced. Lots of life left. Drinks very well. Not sure it will have the same peak as the '08, but it is drinking nicely now.
Red
1989 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Surprised me how much age this wine had because it is drinking incredibly young. Quieter and a bit tight but also a nice roundness to the texture.
Red
1985 Château Magdelaine France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
From a magnum. In a nice spot at the moment. It's got that brambly style that sometimes happens with CF. Drinks pretty well. A light tang to it. I enjoyed it.
Red
1975 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Definitely contender for WOTN. From a magnum. There was some concern that this would fade more quickly but I wasn't that worried. I've almost never had a Latour that felt like it was truly in drinking window and this was no exception. Perhaps the best Latour I've had. Just really enjoyable. Dried fruit and a bit more savory and unctuous to it. Lovely wine.
Red
1995 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From a magnum and this was just much too young. Red velvet in the glass but all still very primary. Maybe opened up a touch but not as much as I would have expected. Had been decanted for ~2.5 hours before rebottling and brought to the restaurant. If we had another one I would hold.
Red
1974 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County USA, California, Sonoma County
My surprise of the night. Haven't had a lot of experience with this wine and the few I've had were more from the 90's at which point I think they might have lost some of the special sauce. This was drinking incredibly well. From a magnum. It has a lot of dark fruits and a bit more unctuous notes and generally just interesting.
Red
2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Probably just starting to get into the drinking window although it's a bit on the early side. It's black and spice and a bit more heft than the other wines even in the slightly cooler vintage.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Nice lovely and sweet. Some orange blossom. Good way to end the evening.
