Introduction

Again, so much for which to be grateful this year, not the least of which our wonderful old friends who always host and cook up a storm on this holiday.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Rosé
2021 Proprietà Sperino Piemonte Rosa del Rosa Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte DOC
Full pink. Herbal, licorice nose. Medium weight, pleasing texture. Full of anise, black fruit, and character. Lightly tannic finish. Excellent rosé.
White - Sparkling
2002 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Full yellow, transient fine bead. Aromatic mix of black fruit and biscuit. Medium to full bodied, expansive and powerful in the mouth. Creamy and fresh with rising bitter citrus. Great Champagne that continually got better with 3 hours of air. Twenty or thirty more years of life here, I'd guess.

White
2007 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Hochrain Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Medium yellow. Dried stone fruit on the nose. Dry, excellent acidity, only the barest of mature Riesling tones. Wonderful balance of power and elegance for an Austrian Riesling at this level.
Red
1996 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Light ruby center, garnet outer third. Engaging aromas of pine, pungent red fruit, and anise. Medium weight, flowing feel on the palate with well integrated acidity and remaining tannins supporting deep, discretely ripe fruit and a vein of earth. Nothing too strapping or brutal here, just a beautiful Corton at its early peak. Impressive.
Red
1961 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Same bottle as noted by EKessler below. Deep color for its age, a shade darker than a 1996 Grand Cru Burgundy drunk alongside it. Peppery, herbal, black fruit nose. Elegant medium weight. Similar flavors with all elements well meshed but not yet completely resolved. I got the sense that a bottle in this condition could still improve and sweeten with more time-amazing!!

White - Sweet/Dessert
1975 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Deep golden with hint of amber. Exquisite high toned perfume along with crême brulée and apricot notes. Not huge in the mouth but seamless with a pure beam of fruit, fantastic acidity, and great length. One could go on and on about a wine like this, but suffice it to say that it was a great privilege and treat to drink.
