Introduction

Standard First Wednesday Wine Club blind tasting...a few special things before Christmas...

Flight 1 - First Wednesday tasting (24 notes)

Interesting to try the two Musars next to each other and also the two Grant Burge Corrytons - one under cork, one under screwcap

White
2008 Grosset Riesling Springvale Watervale Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale
"Served Blind.
Lime, lime peel, kerosene, slight candied lime peel, slight rubber with butter and honey in support. Medium plus intensity acidity, lime, slight lime pith, slight textured burr, finishes with a tiny touch of alcohol warmth.
I went with South Australia Riesling of between 10 & 15 years old under screwcap."

White - Sweet/Dessert
2019 Rieslingfreak Riesling No. 8 Australia, South Australia
"Served Blind.
Lime, mineral notes, slight honey, slight ripe apple. Medium plus intensity acidity, crips green apple, a little texture, off dry. Very simple, quite lean.
Very interesting. Riesling, entry level/poor site Mosel Kabinett or Spatlese about 5 years old."

White
2015 Peter Lehmann Riesling Wigan Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
"Served Blind.
Low intensity aromas show a little lime, candy floss, slight citrus. Juicy with slight candy floss, citrus, a smidge of butter, all quite muted and flat, especially after the first two wines.
I got as far as an Australian Riesling but thought this may have been from a cooler climate so ended up in Orange, NSW and about 5 years old"
White
2012 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
"Served Blind.
Slight butter, apple, herbaceous noes, savoury, gooseberry, slight nettle, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, plenty of fruit lozenge notes here, tangy, a little texture. Nice.
I recognised this as mine."

White
2020 Filipa Pato Bical Post Quercus Portugal
"Served Blind.
Sweaty armpit, a little apple, quite funky on the nose. In the mouth it is tangy, juicy, slightly oxidised, skin contact.
Crikey. Err, experimental Mediterranean stuff…not sure what though. Young."
White
2013 Sorrenberg Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
"Served Blind.
Waxy, butter, slight oxidised notes, apple, cream. Medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth is a touch intrusive, bruised apple, plenty of textured grip, slight nutty notes.
Tastes like older (15 years +) Australian Chardonnay, possibly Western Australia"
White
1998 Ashton Hills Riesling Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
"Served Blind.
Oof! Oxidised and maderised, a little apricot, apple. Medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth, a little butter, honey.
Old and tired. Chardonnay. 1998. Australian. "
White
2014 Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Terrassen Federspiel Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
"Served Blind.
Green citrus; lemon; lime, slight green apple. Medium plus intensity acidity, slight sulphur, slight alcohol warmth, muted fruit.
After a little stumbling the fruit profile and the alcohol warmth led me to Austria and Gruner Veltliner of about 5 years old."
White
2013 Di Lusso Vermentino Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Mudgee
"Served Blind.
Lime, kerosene, slight candied lime peel. Medium plus intensity acidity is quite sharp, quite bitter on the finish, lacks fruit on the palate, a little alcohol warmth completes the palate.
The nose said standard Australian Riesling but the palate threw me an absolute curveball - sharp acid combined with alcohol warmth? I had no idea...Mind you, I don't think it's the first time I've been side-swiped by this wine"
Red
2002 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
"Served Blind. shown in a bracket with the other Musar
Oxidised, plummy, black fruits, sweet spice, a little volatile. Ripe fruit, medium plus intensity acidity is a little sour, textured chalky tannins are tight, leather, funky.
Umm…okay…it's a bit dirty…it's got some age…Southern Italian international varietal blend? 15 years old?

2015 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
"Served Blind. shown in a bracket with the other Musar
Ripe black fruit sweet spice, meaty, earthy, alcohol lends spice on the nose. Volatile on the palate, sour, plenty of tannins prove both grippy and drying, those ripe black fruits are beneath these structural components.
Hmm, as this was served as a pair with the wine above I went with same blend but younger? That volatility again..."

Red
2016 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Cuvée de l'enfant terrible France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
"Served Blind.
Lightweight red berries, sweet spice, jubey notes, with time a smidge of brett. Medium plus intensity acidity, fresh, red berries, jubey notes, simple.
Initially I was going minimal intervention Aussie pinot noir from Tasmania or Victoria but the Brett took me to Europe and, with the lightness of fruit, Jura. Pinot Noir, 4 years old."
Red
1985 Château Plince France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
"Served Blind.
Wet stone and a little cellar stink initially, red over black fruits, iron/blood, a little crushed rock, fruit sweetens with time in the glass. Juicy, fleshy, savoury fruits, crushed rocks, smoky notes, textured burr, slight alcohol warmth. Nice.
I knew this was mine."
Red
2017 Tarrawarra Pinot Noir Reserve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
"Served Blind.
Pretty, ripe, a little cherry, plum, berry, sweet spice. Juicy, alcohol warmth tangy textured burr, fruit persists, it's a bit bolshy, red fruit , alcoholic warmth, bit oofy for me.
Pinot noir, 10 years old, I thought perhaps New Zealand but defo new world."
Red
2007 Domaine Dublère Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
"Served Blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas are perfumed, showing red berry, sweet spice, smidge of earth. Simple nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy, tight tannins are quite silky textured, red berry fruit, slight sweet spice, a little simple but travels long and is balanced. Nice.
Burgundy, 10-15years old from a cooler vintage, possible Chassagne? 1er cru level."
Red
2015 Zena Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir Vista USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
"Served Blind.
Jammy with a fair alcoholic heft, meaty notes, ripe red and black berries, cream, slight tomato leaf, vanilla. Chalky tannins, alcohol warmth translates to the palate as well, vanilla, a little red fruit, baked black fruits, all non-delineated, fairly anonymous.
New World, not sure what varietal, guessing about 7-10 years old, it's a bit out of whack, possibly out of condition."
Red
2016 Mount Mary Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
"Served Blind.
Slightly volatile red hued fruit, touch of herbaceous underpin gives a bit of a whole bunch impression. On the palate it's quite odd - alcohol heat, grippy tannins but sour red fruits…not for me.
This is a (poorly made) Victorian Pinot Noir, probably from Yarra, probably about 5 years old"

Red
2016 Ridge Lytton Springs USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
"Served Blind.
Red and black berry and cherry fruit, sweet spice, a touchy of savoury ness, slight herbaceous underpin, pretty nose, interesting. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, those red and black fruits, softly textured tannins, pretty on the palate as well, balanced, long, charming. Lovely, really lovely.
I was so confounded by the pure joy of this wine that I completely neglected to evaluate what it was! Oops!!"

Red
2012 Grant Burge Cabernet Sauvignon Corryton Park Australia, South Australia, Barossa
"Served Blind - note, under cork and served with the other Corryton
Herbaceous and ripe blackcurrant backed by sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol warmth with ripe black hued fruit, talcy tannins are tending to chalky textured but still retaining a little softness. Nice.
I went with a South Australian, probably Barossa, Cabernet from 2015"
Red
2012 Grant Burge Cabernet Sauvignon Corryton Park Australia, South Australia, Barossa
"Served Blind. note, under screwcap and served with the other Corryton
A little fruit lozenge quality, touch of meatiness, black hued fruit, slight alcohol warmth on the nose. Medium plus intensity acidity, slightly sharp, black hued fruits, talcy tannins are tending to chalky textured but this is slightly lean, tough and elbowy compared to the previous wine
I went with South Australian, probably Barossa and cabernet or cab shiraz from the same producer but probably a 2018"
Red
1998 Jim Barry Shiraz The McRae Wood Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
"Served Blind.
A little dried flowers, leather, black plums, a touch of fruit cake and sweet spice. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins persists long, black hued fruit; a little black cherry joins the plums here. Nice.
Australian Shiraz from South Australia - Barossa or Clare Valley and 10-15 years old"
Red
1988 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Hermitage Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
flawed
"Served Blind.
Fruit tea, meaty, gamey, red hued fruits, medium plus intensity acidity, sour fruit tea - think Cranberry, talc textured tannins but this is out of condition for me. FLAW
I went with Cabernet, Australian, Coonawarra, but old 20-30 years and out of condition unfortunately."
Red
2012 Artiga Fustel Jumilla El Campeador Reserva Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
"Served Blind.
Red berry and currant, ripe, smells thick. Medium plus intensity acidity but this also has a hint of residual sugar, tight chalky tannins, alcohol warmth, pretty rough stuff.
Rustic old world Mediterranean stuff - Perhaps Greek? Italian? I can't really discern what this is. Probably about 5-10 years old; alcohol is a bit pointy"
Red
2017 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
"Served Blind.
Plenty of alcohol, backed black fruits, spiced and peppery. Medium plus intensity acidity, chalky tannins, again alcohol warmth, lots of baked black fruits, liquorice, concentrated and thick.
Old school Australian Shiraz or Shiraz blend but youngish...5 years?"

Flight 2 - Vance (1 note)

Vance was working a late one so pottered down to have a try at the leftovers and to show me a recent purchase from the Hunter

Red
2019 Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard Shiraz Winemakers Selection Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
"Served Blind.
Sweet spice, reductive, slight liquorice and baked blackberry, alcohol warmth lends a peppery prickle. Juicy, savoury, drying textured grip but quite controlled, reductive black fruits, simple, alcohol slightly warm but relatively balanced.
Young (2-4 years old) Shiraz under screwcap, from Victoria? "

As always a lot of fun
