Introduction

An opportunity to have a look at Princes new selection of USA wines with a primary focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Flight 1 (20 notes)

White
2021 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Gris USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Pear and pear skin, smidge of grapefruit. Juicy, fleshy, non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish, pear skin bitterness, touch of burr <shrugs>
White
2021 Monte Rio Cellars Skull White Wine USA, California
Struck match reductiveness, slightly meaty wild ferment (?), stone fruit, lemon, fresh herb notes. Ooh, it's quite sour and bitter on the palate, drying skin contact grip. Nah.
White
2021 Matthiasson Chardonnay Linda Vista Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of peach and apricot, a little sweet spice, very slight bacon fat. More citric on the palate; a little sour in fact and showing quite lemon, slight textured burr. Hmm
White
2021 Evening Land Vineyards Chardonnay Seven Springs Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
Slightly butter, nectarine, lemon, a little toasty note. Juicy, fleshy, fresh nectarine, smidge of woody burr, touch of toasted nuts on the finish. Mmm.
White
2018 WillaKenzie Estate Chardonnay USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Oof, reductive struck match over lemon and stone fruit, bit of toasty oak here as well. And it's a bit woody and reductive on the palate, lacks fruit generosity to offset the winemakers artifice. Time or Nah…
White
2020 Hartford / Hartford Court Chardonnay USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Stone fruit, a little toasty oak, a touch of bacon fat and butter fried hazelnut on the promising nose. Juicy acid, mouth a reflection of the nose, slightly silky rasp on the mid palate, finishes with a touch of annoying alcohol warmth otherwise rather nice.
White
2020 Pike Road Wines Chardonnay USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of jubey stone fruit with a slightly herby/ashy underpin, sweet spice. Wetly juicy, slightly dilute with anonymous stone fruit, finishes a touch bitter. Meh
White
2020 Cristom Chardonnay USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
Concentrated stone fruit, polished oak, bacon fat, toasted nuts, slight butter. Medium plus intensity acidity like the Matthiasson the nose belies the palate; quite citric, lemon, grapefruit and quite lightweight. Hmm.
White
2020 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Bacon fat, hazelnut over lemon and stone fruit; buttered peach. Juicy, fleshy and tangy, a little woody textured burr on the mid palate, slight non intrusive alcohol warmth on the long finish otherwise rather pleasant.

Red
2021 Folk Machine Pinot Noir USA, California, Central Coast
Lightweight jubey red berry and cherry fruit, clean, pretty, a little savoury spice in support as well as a touch of smokiness. Surprisingly quite tight on the palate, grape skin grip persists long and detracts from that pretty fruit. Food will help I think.
Red
2021 Pike Road Wines Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Dark hued fruits shows a little pretty cherry, smidge of oaky sweet spice, almost mocha notes. Juicy but also a little foursquare and bitter on the palate, fruit doesn't really show that well, finishes slightly warm. Meh
Red
2021 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of earthy red cherry, a little sweet spice, touch of cola (?). Juicy, muted red cherry fruit, slight cola note here as well, then closed down by drying, slightly chalky tannic grip. Meh
Red
2021 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
Savoury but pretty black cherry and berry backed by sweet spices and a little cream. Juicy, fleshy, black fruits, woody textured burr, fruit persists, simple, okay
Red
2018 WillaKenzie Estate Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
ripe red cherry shows a little maraschino, sweet spice, polished oak, a little creamy note. Juicy, fleshy ripe red cherry touch of bitterness and non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.
Red
2020 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Ooh, pretty jubey red and black cherry and berry, a little toasted oak in support, smells rich and quite compote. Nice nose in a big way. And so it proves on the palate, generous, pleasing, soft tannic burr persists long, pretty and good in the larger style for a pinot...

Red
2021 Littorai Pinot Noir Les Larmes USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
Slightly meaty and funky, initially red over black berry; ripe strawberry and black raspberry, sweet spice. Juicy, lashings of silky woody tannins carry those red berry fruits long on the palate, time required for me.
Red
2021 Folk Machine Parts & Labor USA, California
Medium minus intensity aromas of strawberry compote, savoury spice and a slightly meaty underpin. Sour, non-delineated red fruit and tight coarse flour textured tannins. Meh.
Red
2021 Monte Rio Cellars Skull Red Wine USA, California
Slightly green, stalky notes, re plums and berry, touch of black plums, slightly almost peppery spice, touch of jubiness. Juicy, jubey, black tea tannins, fresh fruit compote, lots of black, blue and red berry notes here. Long, kind of nice in a fruit forward way
Red
2019 Matthiasson Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
Red over black cherry and currant, a little pyrazine, plenty of sweet spice, Juicy, jubey fruit on the palate, slightly chalky tannins. Hmm especially at AUD 235 a bottle.
Red
2020 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Evangelho Vineyard USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County
Slightly reductive, melange of ripe black and red fruit; plums, berries, currants; sweet spice, polished oak, slightly jubey underpin. Juicy with ripe slightly baked fruit, drying woody tannins, it's all slightly overdone and a bit anonymous, time should help but meh today.

Closing

There seems to be a habit of of harvesting chardonnay a little early...And of not using whole bunch or wild ferment with Pinot Noir...interesting tasting
