Introduction

This tasting really brought out the character of the wine - pretty much every vintage showed a leafy nose, earthy tobacco fruit and high levels of tannin and acidity. The wines were very classic and I liked them very much.

Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Markedly less exuberant than the other 2005s I've had, this had plummy fruit, was salty and very sharp - little sign of new oak, which perhaps is why I found it tougher than other 2005s
Red
2001 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
89 points
Direct, mouthwatering cedar nose, leather and funk, confirmed on palate with lots of tobacco and earth - high acid, but overall this is a high class and characteristic graves
Red
2000 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Evasive on the nose, sharp cedar fruit on the palate, muscular - lacking charm today, but there's plenty of substance there for the future
Red
1998 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
88 points
Cold tea nose, berried fruit and, like the preceding wines, showing cedar, tobacco and high acidity - more pinched than the 2001
Red
1970 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
89 points
Browning, brown sugar sweetness on the palate, still some grip - very attractive
Red
1964 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Some suggestion of TCA at first, but this blew off, and by the end of the evening had blossomed with a lovely sweet tobacco fragrance, fresh, balanced and long
Red
1978 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Intensely leafy nose, then a bit of a hollow, but then there was this long, lingering, layered finish, dry and tannic and on and on it went - fascinating
Red
1961 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
A dark healthy colour, a huge, penetrating iodine nose, on the palate, vigorous, very fresh - the tannins still grippy - a wild, but enticing wine
Red
1989 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Stood out from the other vintages for being ripe and sweet, so charming, complex, sweet, fat - the only wine tonight not to have sharp and rough edges
Red
1983 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Iodine again (like the '61), lovely richness on the palate, fresh and lively
Red
1937 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Cloudy, but the palate was beautiful, fresh, sweet, citrus tones, mellow
Red
1949 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Deep red brown, youthful looking, vigorous medicinal nose, rich, ripe, and still very tannic
