DRC Echezeaux + other Burgundies

Introduction

What a wine the DRC Echezeaux 19 turned out to be, I can only imagine how the supposed higher ranked cuvees performed in this great vintage..!

Tonight it was head and shoulders above the other wines, though I really like Lamarche 18, no signs of that extreme heat. Also, with more cellaring, the Vincent Gravieres 19 could turn out to be absolutely spectacular.

White - Sparkling
2008 Laurent-Perrier Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
Reliable. Sweet citrus fruits, good length. Perfect for drinking now.

2019 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Double decanted 3 hours prior to dinner

Super excited to try my first DRC, though I did not expext the world as this was "only" their Echezeaux. Could I be more wrong?!
This absolutely blew my mind, what an epic wine, drinking insanely well at this early stage.

The nose was just epic with a complete profile of blackberry, blackcurrant buds, sous bois, pine needles, superb mineralité, saffron, cola, and a bevy of spices.

Integrated tannins, full bodied with a fresh sweetness from blood orange, cherries and wild strawberries.
The finish is endless, it literally lastes minutes, just mind-boggling.

This has everything, one of the most complete wines I've ever had.

2018 Domaine Nicole Lamarche Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
94 points
Double decanted 3 hours

Red berries on the nose, vanilla, rosemary also. Later a very smooth candied raspberry note.

Light - medium bodied, so fresh with great fruit concentration. A bit of wet wood and and forest floor follows the sweetness in the very long finish.

Served next to DRC Ech 19, this wine was still thoroughly enjoyable. Lamarche did so well in 18!

2019 Jean-Marc Vincent Santenay 1er Cru Gravières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru

What a nose right after opening! It actually eclipsed DRC Echezeaux..
However, at dinner, it showed quite burly, almost a bit hot.
Very fruit forward nose and clunky palate.

At the very end of the night, after 5 hours in the glass, all that rustic burlyness completely vanished, rendering the wine super clean. Now it is so pure and sensual with raspberry, rose petals and orange rind.
Fantastic mouthfeel, so silky and a super long finish.

It seems this needs quite a bit of cellaring, but what a potential!

2020 Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 1er Cru Pièce 13 France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey 1er Cru
94 points
Double decanted 4 hours, followed some 5 hours

The nose is packed with red berries, polished red fruits, bergamot tea, pencil shavings, cinnamon, leather and rhubarb.

Medium bodied, still youthful with fine tannins, feels very correct, not a hair out of place, but still with so much energy.
Long finish with cherry pits and orange.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2020 Domaine Duroché Gevrey-Chambertin Champ France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
91 points
Double decanted 3 hours

The nose featured very ripe strawberries, rose stems, violets, yeast, water melon and a very nice cool vanilla note.

A bit narrow, feels young (which it is, of course). Very high acidity, with a nice balance from a bitter finish.

Very pretty.

2020 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Very reductive, masking the fruit a bit. A lot of stemmy notes alongside blackcurrant, blueberries, dried apricot, candied orange rind, hawthorn and a lot of spice.

Very serious palate with good concentration, complex and always changing through the night.

This will need many more years, but what a Village it will be (and is)!
