Introduction
In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, only knowing our own wine. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that revealed. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought. In fact this easy setting where we taste the wines several times over 4 – 6 hours is the ultimate way to get a good impression of a wine.
Flight 1 (8 notes)
Red
2006 Château L'Eglise-Clinet
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Beautiful wine with some earth, red and dark berries, sweet spices and creamy notes. Same on the palate, some rust and autumn impressions, beautiful acidity, tannin with a soft bite and a pleasant touch of sweetness. Perfect drinking stage now, but no hurry.
Red
2009 Château La Croix de Gay
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
The first thing to notice is that this wine is fully mature and needs to be drunk now (or next year). So a confirmation of my previous notes. Creamy bouquet with vanilla and other sweet spices, beautiful oak and the same on the palate. Red berries, round and creamy, some pleasant stable impressions, very juicy and a good length.
Red
2006 Château Pape Clément
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Beautiful, elegant and complex bouquet with dark berries, sweet spices, beautiful oak and cedar, some licorice and graphite. Same on the palate, juicy dark berries, coffee, caramel, beautiful acidity and a mild bite of the round tannin. Beautiful, luxurious and great, complex wine. 94 - 95
Red
2006 Château Léoville Barton
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
In the bouquet beautiful rustic impressions, dark berries and some chocolate. On the palate cassis and other dark berries, beautiful acidity and still firm, but round tannin with a good bite. Beautiful and classical wine with still a good future.
Red
2010 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
In the bouquet tobacco, sweet spices and smoke, luxurious oak and cedar. Same on the palate, juicy dark berries, round tannin and beautifully fresh acidity. A great length, smooth and very exclusive. Already such a great pleasure, but without any doubt a great future ahead!
Red
2008 Château Certan de May
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Beautiful and somewhat rustic bouquet with sweet spices, dark berries and graphite. On the palate red and dark berries, sweet spices, sweet chocolate, some truffle, beautiful acidity and friendly, round tannin with a good bite. Will still improve over the next 5+ years. 92 - 93
Red
2010 Château Beychevelle
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
On the bouquet beautiful dark berries, oak and cedar. Same on the palate, vanilla, chocolate, sweet spices, caramel, beautiful acidity and round tannin with a good bite and a long future ahead. 93+
Red
2016 Château Saint-Pierre
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Very youthful bouquet with cherries and black berries as well as beautiful vanilla from the oak. On the palate cherries and black- as well as red berries. Beautiful acidity and round tannin. Youthful, mouth filling and beautiful wine with a future of at least another decade. 93+ for now.
