Summer Truffle Dinner

Chicago, IL

Tasted June 6, 2008 by Nanda with 493 views

Introduction

Paul brought back baseball sized truffles from Tartufi, Italy and generously shared. So dinner was on!

Flight 1 - BUBBLY (2 notes)

With mixed-spiced nuts, cheese and bread.

White - Sparkling
1998 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Special Club Brut France, Champagne
Flavorful with good complexity and depth. Well balanced with a nutty, round fruit profile and soft acidity. Long finish has complexity and the full array of flavors.
White - Sparkling
N.V. H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Réserve France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Ultra crisp with lots of zip and a fine, tight bead. Fresh apple and citrus fruits. Tangy, refreshing and crisp finish.

Flight 2 - BURGUNDY (2 notes)

With roasted chicken in a cream-mushroom-herb sauce ... very tasty.

Red
2000 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Round dark cherry fruit with a healthy dose of earth and mushroom character underneath. Fine tannins and cut. Polished and well balanced with a nuanced, complex style.
Red
2001 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
In a more modern style with black fruit, lower acid and a slight dose of sweet oak. Forward lush fruit character with good depth and concentration of flavor. Still young and primary.

Flight 3 - SPARKLER INTERMEZZO (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2002 Argyle Vintage Brut USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Fresh and zippy with good ripe fruit and body. Not complex - but well made and complete.

Flight 4 - PIEDMONT (2 notes)

The featured course --- Summer Truffle Risotto.

Red
1995 Elio Altare Langhe Barbera Larigi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Gorgeous, perfumed and effusive nose. Loads of red and black fruits, tar and smoke. Palate is richly textured with fine balance. Well-integrated oak, suave tannins and fresh acidity. Pure, complex and lifted. Outstanding --- the best Barbera I've ever had.
Red
1996 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Loreto Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Nearly black in color with on-again, off-again aromatics of dark fruits, flowers and licorice. Despite a couple hours in the decanter this was brooding and tight. Good richness of fruit but just too tannic to be enjoyed today. Like the stuffing, but needs time.

Flight 5 - BORDEAUX / CAB (3 notes)

With grilled ribeye steaks and asparagus.

Red
1983 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Effusive and complex aromatics. Initial funk blows off to reveal aged dark fruits, cedar, minerals, tar and spice accents. Still quite lively on the palate with round currant fruits, soft-suave tannins and plenty of balancing acidity. Drinking damn well - a fine example of perfectly mature bdx.
Red
1986 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
Full, open and complex nose releases sromas of sweet currant fruit and cedar with pronounced tobacco leaf, green pepper and herbs. Very PLL-like. Palate is still richly concentrated, lively and well balanced. California -- but with a real tip-of-the cap to the old world. Delicious, long and showing plenty of complexity. Served blind in a Bordeaux flight - 1 guess for Cali but most leaning towards the old world.
Red
1998 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Full, open aromas of tarry dark fruits, minerals, leather and spice. Round lush fruits on the palate with buoyant acidity and fine tannins. On the younger side a good drinking window - tasty, fresh and complex.

Flight 6 - VIN SANTO (0 notes)

With fresh strawberries in balsamic sauce.

A wow meal with great friends, plenty of laughs and wine. Thanks Paul for a really fun, fun night.
