Introduction
I was gonna pass on this tasting but I'm glad I didn't. Makes me happy to see there are wines that show like this without a ridiculous price tag.
Flight 1 - Cru Beaujolais (6 notes)
The person pouring decided to change it up and serve the younger ones first. Great call. I think these should be enjoyed younger anyways. They probably will develop fine with a few years but these are quite enjoyable now with some air.
Dark red cherries on the palate but with an awesome earthiness to dilute any ripeness from the cherries, leaving just a hint of it. Light dusting of graphite, gently spiced aged oak, and a linger of minerals on the finish.
Palate showed dark and deep cranberry flesh with dark pomegranate juice, mixed with a streak of dark and bitter minerals, and gentle steeped tea and light tree bark on the finish.
Gentle attack of spice on the front of the palate, followed by approachable bitter red fruits like cranberries and pomegranate skins. These fruits are floating in a wide, clean pond. Dark and lightly bitter minerals on the mid palate and finishes with a soft trail of red fruits.
Palate reflects the nose completely and also in a good way but with the addition of bitter minerals and spice on the finish.
Flavors of pomegranate pulp and bitter skin, light graphite on the mid to end palate, and fruit continues onto the finish with lightly bitter river minerals.
Whole cranberries on the palate with its clean fruit flavors and gentle bitterness, a refreshing greenness that’s somehow enjoyable, and gentle minerals on the finish.
Closing
I've always heard that Beaujolais are some of the most underrated wines in the world, and with this tasting I can see why. These were all incredible for what they are. All of them showed a nice sense of place and a surprising amount of complexity.
Now, I'm not saying these are some of the best wines in the world, although they do prove themselves absolutely worthy to be called some of the better ones in Beaujolais, but if I were to have tasted these blind, I would've guessed Burgundy, and dare I say maybe even a bit more interesting. *runs and finds cover*
