California 2023

Tasted August 13, 2023 - August 22, 2023 by andrewdodd86 with 183 views

Flight 1 - Monterey Bay (2 notes)

Beer
N.V. Alvarado Street Brewery Cold Pressed Hazy IPA USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey
93 points
Nothing crazy, nice tropical fruit, straight forward
Beer
N.V. Alvarado Street Brewery Mai Tai PA USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey
92 points
Middle of the right, lighter West Coast IPA, did well with food, refreshing

Flight 2 - Sausalito / Cavallo Point (3 notes)

Red
2021 Occidental Pinot Noir Freestone-Occidental USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
94 points
Cherry, cranberry, nice red fruit. Light and bright. Delicious.
Red
2014 Carlisle Two Acres USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
94 points
By the bottle at Cavallo Point. An interesting blend that’s hard to pin down but full of complexity. Tobacco, chocolate, black pepper, black raspberry kinda brambly and earthy. Delicious. Plenty of life ahead Now-2030?+
Spirits
2022 Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 53.5% USA, Kentucky
Nose/Floral - cinnamon and oak
Sweet - maple and vanilla
Nutty - some almond
Spicy - med cinnamon
Earthy - mild white pepper
Smoky - no
Woody - rich but not funky cedar
Fruit - all orange. Hallmark of BT wheated for me. Apple and peach
Color - dark gold
Palate - sauve and smooth. Oak and spice up front
Finish - same. Persistent but doesn’t linger forever. Still quite pleasant
Value - decent price by the pour
Overall - fantastic as always. Maybe lacking a touch in the powerhouse aromatics department but makes up for it in elegance. Middle of the pack for ORVW.

Note: glassware was an old fashioned glass not a Glencairn

Flight 3 - Napa Winery Tours (7 notes)

Red
2018 Harlan Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
100 points
Beautiful, deep dark blueberry, showing more earth and depth than the barrel sample. Cassis. Blackberry. Does strike me more as hillside fruit. Aromatically incredible with violet and rose jumping out. Gorgoeus. Approachable now but would be best 2030-2040+
Red
2021 Harlan Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
NR barrel sample

Similar notes to the 2018 but less earth and violet and a touch more red fruit. Tannins are there for sure but they’re not chalky. Delicous. Fun to tastes Harlan from the barrel.
Red
2021 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Vidovich Lane Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Winery Tasting - Tobacco, cassis, blueberries, violets, graphite and grilling herbs. Solid, strong preference for the Panek. 2025-2030+

Red
2021 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Bodega Thieriot USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
94 points
More earth than the Summa, floral, darker fruit, lavender, licorice and violet. Qualitatively maybe better, but profile preference for the brighter fresher fruit in the Summa personally

Red
2021 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
Cherry forward, bright, raspberry, touch of earth but not nearly as much as the B Thieriot, nice acid. Love the fruit profile here and my preferred Pinot today

Red
2019 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
94 points
Still a touch tannic for sure and youthful. Tight but still delicious, black raspberry and blackberry notes. Needs time. 2027-2035+

Flight 4 - Hunter's House & Wedding (15 notes)

Spirits
2016 WhistlePig The Boss Hog III The Independent Edition Straight Rye Whiskey, 60.3% USA, Vermont
98 points
Hunter Double Blind Tasting - Sample 1 - searingly tannic okay, little bit of charred oak notes, caramel, maple

Post: Scotch finish less prevalent, still really liked it, probably #2/8
Spirits
N.V. WhistlePig 15 Year Old Estate Oak Straight Rye Whiskey, 46% USA, Vermont
94 points
Hunter Double Blind Tasting

Sample 2 - nose is a little lighter, comes across as more of a dusty touch. Thinner mouthfeel. Still nice light caramel.

Post: Did have some grassy notes
Spirits
N.V. High West Yippee Ki-Yay Blended Straight Rye Whiskey, 46.0% USA, Utah
92 points
Hunter Double Blind Tasting
Sample 3 - nose is more floral, lighter and brighter, elegant. More age? Dusty? Lighter palate in the middle.
Post: Didn't get much of the finish, Batch #4
Spirits
N.V. Jefferson's Presidential Select 21 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey, 45.2% USA, Kentucky
92 points
Hunter Double Blind Tasting
Sample 4 - more modern nose, unsure on mashbill. Palate wise seems older and a little flat. Shorter finish. Wasn't exactly wowed
Spirits
2016 Booker's 2016-LE Limited Edition "Big Time Batch" Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, 68.1% USA, Kentucky
94 points
Hunter Double Blind Tasting
Sample 5 - much higher proof, searingly astringent. More modern. Some earth and licorice. Palate filling. Less nuance.
Spirits
2016 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Thomas H. Handy Sazerac (2016) Straight Rye Whiskey, 63.1% USA, Kentucky
98 points
Hunter Double Blind Tasting

Sample 6 - more modern, higer proof, more month coating. Carmel and big ass cedar. Astringent. Nice. More nuance. Good finish

Post: Probably tied #2/8

2016 release
Spirits
N.V. Kentucky Bourbon Distillers Willett Family Estate 10 Year Old Barrel #1432 (Binny's) Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 65.8% USA, Kentucky
Hunter Double Blind Tasting

NR: Sample tasted a little off considering what was being poured, probably open too long
Sample 7 - a little lighter palate. Little shorter. Nice. But didn’t blow my mind.

Spirits
N.V. Buffalo Trace Stagg Jr. Batch 1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 67.2% USA, Kentucky
99 points
Hunter Double Blind Tasting

Sample 8 - Way more aromatic. Rye spice, cinnamon, my favorite. Killer. Wow.

Post: Didn't find this as overblown as some people knocked it for. Loved it, whiskey of the night for me
Spirits
N.V. Evan Williams 10 Years Old "Since 1783" Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 43% USA, Kentucky
Just nice light dusty caramel. Smooth and easy drinking, but nothing pre fire crazy. From a glass flask sized bottle
Spirits
1970 National Distillers Old Grand-Dad Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 43.0% USA, Kentucky
Vintage unclear - 1970's ish sample from Pimm. Supposedly National Distillers. Liked this pour better than others I've had. More classic dusty notes without the funk. May have to try some others and give ND another chance.
Spirits
N.V. Weller Full Proof (Mission Wine) Single Barrel Select No.259 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 57% USA, Kentucky
No specific notes, pretty middle of the road pick. Solid, but not quite the aromatic lifts I remember from some of the Maison Corbeaux picks etc. Sill nice
Beer
2023 Russian River Brewing Company Pliny the Elder USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
95 points
Still really solid, not as overly hoppy as I remember in years past. It also seems the competition has caught up to some degree because it comes across as just a good solid DIPA these days rather than something that just blows the doors off
Beer
2023 Russian River Brewing Company Blind Pig IPA USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
95 points
Still delightful, excellent on draft. Similar to Pliny it's still as staple but I remember it being more mind bending in the past
Beer
2023 Russian River Brewing Company Mind Circus Hazy IPA USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
99 points
Okay this may be a new favorite. Although it's clearly a departure this is a terrific HAZY IPA from RR Brewing that I really dig. Classic NEIPA citrus and tropical fruit/pineapple. Shocker. It's amazing. Nelson & Strata
Beer
2023 Russian River Brewing Company Mosaic Stack IPA USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
94 points
It's delicious, but nothing crazy memorable or a home run. Same complain for a lot of the Grimm single hop expressions is they become one note and kind of miss some complexity and depth. Kinda of classic West Coast IPA
