White
2018 Precedent Riesling Old Vine White Wirz Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Cienega Valley
89 points
bright straw with gold overtones and light- to medium-bodied. petrol on the nose… and then red and green apple, white stonefruit, citric zest, and whiffs of dried white flowers. dry and acidic but not overly austere in the mouth: white fleshed fruit, mirabelle plums, and underripe gooseberries come thru mid-palate with very subtle honeyed overtones. lovely minerality runs from front to back and stays thru the moderate finish that has just hint of spice accents.

the complexities were only hinted at… which had me wondering whether more bottle age would have enhanced them, or whether the wine was already past its prime.

12.8% AbV; whole-cluster foot-trod bunches then basket-pressed; fermentation and ageing in 1,000L Slavonian oak barrels for around ten months; unfiltered and unfined (flecks of tartrates/lees in the bottle)

Precedent is (or was) the solo project of Nathan Kandler, with the aim "to create authentic wines that taste of a particularly special place." as such he's had access to fruit from other heritage vineyards such as Evangelho and Kirschenmann
White
2019 Bedrock Wine Co. Riesling Wirz Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Cienega Valley
91 points
pale goldish straw and medium body in the glass. after the petrol… a perfumed nose of mixed white pears, grapefruit skin, ripe white flowers, lime zest, and white stonefruit. very smooth on the entry with a slightly round feel. juicy flavours of pear, yellow apple, and even quince (!) in the mid palate are lifted by a mid-toned somewhat citric acidity. caraway, coriander and beeswax accents meld in as well, while a pithy mineral bitterness provides bottom notes. good persistence with a saline streak.

very good effort from Bedrock. somewhat in an Alsatian mode, this wine can easily gain with more bottle age. indeed, i wish i had waited to open this.

13.5% AbV; no figures on RS, but i guesstimate it at ~4g/L, with acidity a couple of points higher; aged in neutral French oak cask
White
2020 Maidenstoen Wines Riesling Wirz Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Cienega Valley
89 points
greenish straw colour and light body. just whiffs of petrol… and then yellow stonefruit, lime, and yellow flowers. dry and refreshing on the entry, it has an agreeable viscosity. in the mouth is mostly citric, but nicely accented by coriander and cumin notes. good acidity and minerality and moderate length.

a bit on the lean and sinewy side, could do with a bit more flesh to play against its complexities.

12.16% AbV

Maidenstoen seem to specialise in Riesling and some Grüner Veltliner from Central Coast sited. they describe themselves as:
"a small production of wines that come from exceptional vineyards. Our interpretation of these sites focuses on clean winemaking and purity of expression with minimal inputs."
