Flight 1 (16 notes)

Red
2018 Weingut Reinhold und Cornelia Schneider Endinger Diel Spätburgunder Germany, Baden
91 points
Tasted blind. Magnum. Light colour, light and floral style, wonderfully fresh and floral (especially for what turned out to be a 2018), clean and pure, ripe and bright red fruit, supple and juicy, spicy finish, slightly lactic, creamy finish, very good length. Very attractive.
Red
2015 Max Schell Spätburgunder Grand Max Germany, Ahr
91 points
Tasted blind. Magnum. Delicately autumnal style, aromatic, spicy slate, supple and fresh, mildly grippy tannins, clearly recognisable as an Ahr wine, at peak.
Red
2015 Domaine Bart Fixin 1er Cru Hervelets France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin 1er Cru
91 points
Tasted blind. Floral, roses, light colour, firm and cool style, hint of dried fruit, light and bright style, firm tannins, fresh and youthful for age.
Red
2015 Josten & Klein Mayschosser Mönchberg Pinot Madeleine Germany, Ahr
91 points
Tasted blind. Magnum. Very specific style, very developed colour. Wonderfully matured, spicy and stemmy, candied fruit, lactic, meat stew, delicate style, creamy finish, good length.
Red
2017 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Tasted blind. Light and bright colour, fragrant nose, elegant style, raspberry and roses, youthful, pure and transparent, papery tannins, long and flowing finish. There is real finesse here.

Red
2019 Daniel Twardowski Pinot Noix Ardoise Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
Tasted blind. Pure and floral, fragrant, Alpine herbs, delicately creamy, hint of spice on the finish, firm but fine tannins, noticeable oak on the finish. In a relatively impenetrable phase, not nearly as convincing now as last year, revisit in 2025. Score based on potential.
Red
2018 Bernhard Huber Hecklinger Schlossberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Baden
93 points
Tasted blind. Delicate and elegant when compared to the Cardeuse which accompanied it, fragrant, firm but refined, noticeable oak, classical style, cool minerality, very good length. Stylish.
Red
2018 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot La Cardeuse Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Tasted blind. Ripe and burly style, deep colour, quite alcoholic, firm and tannic, concentrated, earthy, warm style, needs time.
Red
2016 Manuel Olivier Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
92 points
Tasted blind. Classical style, fragrant, firm acidity, lovely balance and harmony, undergrowth and spices (cinnamon, cardamom), lacks a bit of fruit, slightly drying finish.
Red
2016 J.J. Adeneuer Walporzheimer Gärkammer Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Ahr
93 points
Tasted blind. Quintessential Ahr, fragrant and floral, whiff of vanilla, lovely balance between freshness and maturity, excellent length. Showing its full potential today.

2007 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
94 points
Tasted blind. Beautifully matured Burgundy, flirting with Grand Cru level, cool minerality, meaty, undergrowth, matière, perfumed, earth, firm tannins, very good length. An impressively complete package - even more so for a 2007.
Red
2016 Meyer-Näkel Spätburgunder 'SR' Germany, Ahr
Tasted blind. An extremely rare wine made from - if I am not mistaken - millerandage grapes. The nec plus ultra in the Meyer-Näkel line-up. Liquorice root, deep and spicy oak, hint of volatility, nervous palate, difficult to assess. Not rated.
Red
2011 Jean Stodden Herrenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Ahr
93 points
Tasted blind. Developed colour, marvellously fragrant nose, undergrowth, deep and spicy, juicy and supple, stalky energy, excellent length. Has improved considerably in bottle in the last five years. At peak.
Red
2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
95 points
Tasted blind. Matière, powerful, shows some age but still youthful, clearly Grand Cru authority, orange zest, red and blue fruit, masculine and concentrated, well integrated tannins, early maturity, great future. Unshowy. Impresses by its understatement.
Red
2005 August Kesseler Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder Germany, Rheingau
93 points
Tasted blind. Mature but lively appearance, deep and spicy, velvety tannins, liquorice, satiny tannins, hint of chocolate, long and spicy finish. Fully mature. Three bottles tasted, all from the same case purchased in 2008 and kept in perfect storage ever since. One was fine, the second was difficult and the third was maderised. Disconcerting bottle variation.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
93 points
Tasted blind. Lively and bright, remarkably youthful, refreshing acidity and firm but beautifully refined tannins, playful, bright cherry fruit, excellent length. A huge surprise, completely defying its age, showing the very best side of 2005. Long life.
