Annual holiday get-together

St. Genevieve

Introduction

The 1986 Gruaud Larose was worth the price of admission. The 2010 Mount Eden Cabernet would be also but I took a small pour since it was from the other table - two monumental wines. Everything else was fine.

Flight 1 - Champagnes and white from our table (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
88 points
From a magnum, drank a small pour at a tasting. This had a sensible champagne frame except for an off-putting artificial vanilla flavor.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Louis Roederer Champagne Collection 242 France, Champagne
93 points
This bottle was just a touch more impressive than previous experiences. Lots of minerality, pear and a sweet creaminess.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Toast, lemon and acid, none of which dominates. The pear flavor stands out. Well balanced.

White - Sparkling
2012 R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Présidence Vieilles Vignes France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Drank a small glass over 1 hour. I love the brioche on this champagne, while there is also acidic energy that keeps it light.

White
2011 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
94 points
I felt this was showing well despite a bad food pairing with it. Saline, oyster shell, kind of a funky quality that adds interest.
White
2014 Jean et Sébastien Dauvissat Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
93 points
Drank a small glass over an hour. My experience with this producer is it being a more full-bodied chablis, and this was no exception. Pear, apple, golden fruit with lemon, minerality, saline and toasty oak.

Flight 2 - Reds from our table (4 notes)

Red
2017 Ayoub Pinot Noir Anonimo Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
93 points
Pop and pour, drank a small glass over an hour. Fruity and earthy, this just screamed Oregon pinot noir to me. Powerful and yet soft.
Red
1986 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
I assume this was decanted but cannot confirm. It certainly showed well, just jumped out of the glass with funk and tertiary Bordeauxness. It rather overpowered the 1986 Grand Puy Lacoste poured along side. At the same time, this was rather brutish in its make-up.

1986 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Unknown treatment, drank a small glass over at least an hour. My experience seems consistent with several other notes here. This is easy drinking and pleasant, it doesn't have any sparkle or great interest as you would expect from a decent 1986 bordeaux. It would have been great with duck or a mushroom tart, not next to 1986 Gruaud Larose and hanger steak.

Red
2004 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
I struggled a bit with this light yet powerful and tannic barolo. Matching acid and tannin, some rustic slightly pruny fruit. This wasn't as painful as some barolo's but cut from the same cloth and not really my style. I don't see a purpose in rating it, but my enjoyment level might approach 89-90.

Flight 3 - Notable wines from other tables (3 notes)

Red
2009 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
94 points
A small pour at a tasting. This was glorious with so much earth and cherry.
Red
2012 Occidental Pinot Noir Cuvée Catherine Occidental Station USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
This was a good showing for this producer. Balanced, clearly acidic but the fruit is vibrant and holds up to the acid. This is a great expression of Sonoma pinot.
Red
2010 Mount Eden Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
95 points
CHABLIS28's bottle. One sniff of this and you know it is an old school California cabernet. Savory with plum, saddle leather, cedar, herbs, tobacco and red flowers. There is some indication of American oak. I had a high expectation and this at least met my expectation, if not exceeded.
