Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2002 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Deep ruby. Cassis, vanilla oak nose - attractive if a little too oaky right now. Reasonable depth of fruit on mid-palate but very tannic, with firm tannins dominating the finish. Needs a lot more time - very difficult to read right now. **(*)
Red
2001 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Deep ruby. Quite closed on the nose - cassis, slightly meaty. Some nice pure cassis fruit more evident on the palate, this has good depth and a nice fresh, if still firm finish. The best wine of this flight. **(**).
Red
1999 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Medium deep ruby, medium pale ruby rim - noticeably more developed appearance. Very fruit nose, not particularly intense, slightly earthy and woody. Open and accessible, but lacks stuffing on the palate with a shortish slightly tannic finish. Almost ready to drink. **
Red
1998 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Nice purity on the nose, lovely fruit. Nice fresh palate, some slight savoury, beefy notes. Perhaps lacks a little depth and still very tannic on the finish. Needs at least another 5 years. **(*).

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
1981 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Earthy, quite stalky with iron notes. Not very generous or yielding. A little dried out and tannic on the palate, slightly musty, shortish finish. No fruit to speak of. Drinkable and probably better with food. *
Red
1985 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Very sulphury and dirty nose at first, but this gradually blew off to reveal a spicy, savoury dark-fruited wine. Not at all 85 like. A bit lean with a moderate, firm slightly uncompromising finish. **.
Red
1983 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Attractive, slightly leathery, sweet red-fruited nose. Mellow and harmonious on the palate, not particularly serious or profound but charming, alluring and quite elegant with a sweet medium length finish. ***1/2

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
1975 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Nice nose, earthy, slightly tobacoey, spicy and slight hint of stalk but also some underlying sweet red fruit. Fresh on the palate, with fine tannins and some sweet fruit on the good length finish. Like this. ***1/2
Red
1978 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Medicinal nose, with darker cassis fruit, cedar, some meaty notes. Core of sweet, pure black fruit on the palate, attractive spicy complexity, earthy notes on the medium/good length finish. ****1/2
Red
1966 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
This is really quite closed, not giving much at all. Some curranty fruit, iron and earth on the palate, a little lean with a moderate length finish. *1/2

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
1994 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Wow - lovely expressive nose with intense cassis fruit, savoury with hints of tobacco. Classic claret nose. Similar complexity on the palate which has fresh acidity and some firm tannin on the mediukm length finish. Perhaps does lack a little depth but a very good 1994 nonetheless. ***1/2
Red
1995 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Closed on the nose. Some cassis fruit, savoury, beefy notes. Shut down quite hard on the palate but with decent underlying depth of red-toned fruit, firm finish. Needs at least 3 more years. **(**)
Red
1996 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Deep, pure cassis fruit on the nose, markedly more open than the 95 without, as yet, the complexity of the 94. Deep, sleek and balanced across the palate, with tobaccoey black fruit and soil notes on an extended finish. ***(*1/2)

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
1986 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Dark savoury nose but some nice perfume. Very well structured on the palate, in fact the tannins out-last the fruit on the slightly stripped finish. Perhaps low-level cork taint? *1/2
Red
1982 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Sweet, spicy red-fruited nose, notes of leather and caramel. Mature, harmonious, sweet and complex. Fresh, a little tannic on the finish, perhaps slightly short. ****
Red
1970 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Slightly lean and earthy nose, quite austere in fact, notes of iron. Better on the palate with attractive, savoury fruit, fresh acidity and a good length finish. ****

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Nose is not giving much at all. Cassis, spice and vanilla oak on the palate, firm finish but plenty of depth here and should be good. Needs a long time though. **(**)
Red
2003 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Very open, ripe nose, fresh cassis and bilberry fruit, oak, but also attractive floral notes. Very concentrated on the palate with lots of ripe, mouth coating tannins, bright, vibrant fruit, fresh, linear acidity and a very long, balanced finish. Surprisingly approachable now this has also got all it needs to make old bones. ***(**).

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red
1990 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Lovely, cedary, expressive nose. Complex, slightly herbal, some tobacco. Classy. Leafy, tobacoey fruit on the palate, yet nicely ripe too. Only medium bodied but classy, with decent acidity and fine tannins on the lenghty finish. *****
Red
1989 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Less expressive on the nose than the 90, with cassis fruit and some beefy notes. Still quite youthful, with prue cassis fruit, less deep, complex and structued than the 90 but still a lovely wine with a good length savoury finish. Needs more time. ****
