Evening at John Glas house

Introduction

John Glas and I got together to try some big reds with T-bone steaks on the grill, and ended up trying a lot of wines that had been open for one to as much as six days. The evening was an eclectic mix of very nice wines with, in our opinion, not a bad wine in the bunch. Thanks John. Well done.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White - Off-dry
2006 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
90 points
Nose: Slate minerality and honey nuances. Palate: Honey and hints of apple. This wine is drinking well on day three.
Red
2005 Château Tournefeuille France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol
91 points
Nose: Dark and red berry notes with some floral undertones. After aeration clay loam and truffle qualities start to show. Palate: Good acid and tannin levels up front with red fruit predominately. This is drinking well now but will only improve with some age. Very good QPR at sub $30 and my WOTN.
Red
2003 Owen Roe Red Wine Yakima Valley USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
90 points
Nose: Buttery, mint and a little olive oil quality (after aeration). Raspberry after initial pour. Palate: Raspberry, buttery qualities and minty hints from the nose follow through on palate. Nice lengthy finish. This wine at first seemed a little much, but after some time it became very enjoyable (albeit it followed the Tournefeuille which is a tough act to follow).
Red
2007 A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir USA, Oregon
86 points
Nose: Very sweet floral nose (sweetness was a little odd and overwhelming). Palate: Soft raspberry and a quick clean finish. This wine was open for a couple days so my score might be a little jaded, but overall this wine is just OK at best.
Red
2005 Stangeland Pinot Noir Estate Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
89 points
Nose: Subtle floral qualities. Nose is very soft and simple. Palate: Floral with raspberry and strawberry. Nice but not great.
White - Off-dry
2006 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
Nose: Big slate minerality with apple. Palate: Apple with BIG richness, big honey, and a very long finish. John had this wine open for almost a week and I was amazed at its freshness. This wine was a close second for my WOTN.
