Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1998 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne
Very complex nose with a very agressiv presence. Mostly bonfire, caramel and wheat toast with a nice butter-like feel to it.
Really very pure in the mouth. and very cleansing. Pure green apple flavours, very present and almost vibrating acidity.
A lot of wheat and butter is also there with hints of different nuts. The bubbles are agressive.
Some sweetness to it also, especially in the finish with mostly honey-like flavours..
I absolutely loved this!!

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2006 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Tasted blind.
Nose: Dust, caramel and popcorn.
Palate: Significant alcohol is clearly overpowering the flavours. There is coconut, hazelnut and a little butter in the mid-palate Some citrus flavours are coming through but in general quite unbalanced and a little strange.
It clearly improved over the evening and got more balanced the more air it got.
White
2006 Diatom Chardonnay Babcock Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
Tasted blind.
The nose is a little weak at first but opens up nicely in the glass. Mostly winegums and vanilla.
In the palate it seems a little bit synthetic with some sweetness to it but also a clear presence of plastic and vanilla. It is fairly sweet but still have a reasonable acidity.
Still a little bit unbalanced. Clearly improves more with air.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White
2006 Alban Vineyards Roussanne Estate USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
Tasted blind.
Very interesting nose with peach and white flowers but it feels a little restrained.
The palate is powerful and intense with liquorice and different flowers and some yellow plum.
It is rich and perfumed, but lacks a little acidity to really pick it up to a higher level.
A very interesting wine.
Improves a lot with more air but the alcohol is also peeking through.
White
1985 Château Rieussec R France, Bordeaux
Nose: pee, caramel and over-ripe notes.
Palate: Pear, over-ripe flavours, apple. A lot of alcohol coming through.
Basically a wine that it too old. Is actually drinkable but no longer interesting or even relevant.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2007 Achával-Ferrer Malbec Finca Mirador Argentina, Mendoza
Very full and almost "heavy" nose with a lot of black currant liqueur and also a dustyness like note to it.
The palate is very nice and full without being over the top. Acidic black currant with a well-rounded mineral note and some fresh green herbs. The tannins are a little bit withdrawn but overal the wine is very pure clearly a wine on a high level.
Red
2007 Achával-Ferrer Malbec Perdriel Finca Bella Vista Argentina, Mendoza
The nose is again powerful and is also mostly black currant but also meat and a lot of dark chocolate.
Big and powerful fruit on the palate with an impressive backbone with lots of tannin and acidity. Does end with a little to much alcohol but also an impressive wine.
Red
2007 Achával-Ferrer Malbec Finca Altamira Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, La Consulta
Very restricted nose with dark fruits and even more dust than the others.
The fruit (black currant) is polished and also refreshing but still powerful.
Some minerals and also some rhubarb..
Also an impressive wine at a very high level.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
1995 Franciscan Estate Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley
Nose seems to be classic Bdx but also with some sewer and pine notes.
The palate is slightly sweet with a bit to much alcohol coming through.
Lead, pencil-shavings, cedar, coffee and a little barn.
The wine is slightly odd and very unbalanced but still very interesting and nice.
Red
1998 Fattoria Le Pupille (Elisabetta Geppetti) Saffredi Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Well, how to put this nicely but basically a lot of shit in the nose. Also with some pine sweetness.
On the palate it is very impressive, still very young with a nice acidity and very powerful tannins. Black currant bush, pencil-shavings and a long dry length.
I was clearly impressed and was actually surprised that this was not from Bdx. I did not find the usual green herbs that is usually present in the cab-blends from Tuscany.

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
1997 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
The nose is very interesting with notes of both dark cherries but also some meat-notes in the background. There is also some ground coffee and sewer nicely mixed with saltwater.
Very potent taste, still with very primary fruit mostly coming through as dark cherries. Huge acidity, almost electric carrying nicely through the aftertaste. Impressive backbone and a good balance between the acidity and the tannins.

Flight 7 (1 note)

Red
1998 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Nose: buttermilk, white pepper. Very powerful.
Mouth: Very potent dark plum fruit with loads of black pepper. Very powerful and a lot of different spices.
Very impressive wine and definately one to keep for a long time.

Flight 8 (1 note)

Red
1990 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Very intense nose with notes of sewer, black pepper and mild dark forest fruits and even some blueberry.
Huge acidity in the mouth with a slight bitter aftertaste. It is very intense and full-bodied with a lot of sour cherry. Amazing length and still very harsh, almost young, tannins.
Was served blind and I did definatly not guess BdM due to the very powerful and almost over-powering tannins. Was amazed when I learned that this was from 90!!

Flight 9 (1 note)

Red
1955 Brotte Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Nose: Varnish, some barnyard, cabbage and some oxidation.
Mouth: Leather, coffee, decent acidity, brown sugar, cola.
Just old.. Not undrinkable but more a curiosity than a real good wine.

Flight 10 (1 note)

Red - Fortified
1985 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
Decanted to remove the sediment about 5 hours before the tasting and poured back in the bottle. This was perhaps a mistake as the wine did not have any structure left when it cam time to drink it.
Mostly almonds and alcohol in the nose which also goes for the taste in the mouth. The alcohol is simply overpowering the taste. Most likely a defective bottle but not very apparant. If the bottle was not flawed this vintage seems to be very fragile..
