Willamette Wine Storage

Introduction

Our weekly wine tasting group decided to do rieslings this week. This is probably my favorite varietal, so I'm always excited to check out new producers, and re-visit wines I've tasted before.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2007 Viento Riesling Underwood Montain Vineyard USA, Oregon/Washington, Columbia Gorge

Big rich over-ripe apple scents on the nose along with a hint of honey and nutmeg. The nose is a bit awkward as well. The wine is soft on the palate, and the acidity is pretty light. Red apple flavors appear, and they are a bit over-ripe, but not as extreme as on the nose. The wine is pretty clean, but there's nothing here that excites me.
White
2008 Matello Riesling Whistling Ridge Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
87 points
Very light nose with some pear scents. There is some nice acidity on this wine, and a floral component that mixes in with the pear flavors. I still want some more acidity, but the wine is enjoyable.
White
2007 Dr. Heinz Wagner Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
89 points
Nice nose with honey and apples and an interesting hint of minerality that is quite enjoyable. There's a floral note on the palate along with plenty of honey and apple flavors. The acidity is on the lighter side.
White
2002 Chateau Ste. Michelle & Dr. Loosen Riesling Eroica USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
82 points
This nose is showing the age of the wine, with a hint of something floral going on, but WD40 dominating the experience. There are some nice apple flavors left, and a hint of petrol, but overall the wine is now empty on the palate. Drink it up if you've still got some.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Elk Cove Vineyards Ultima USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
89 points
This dessert wine has a rich nose full of apricots and some honey. The apricot flavors on the palate are powerful, clean, and accompanied by some lighter acidity. Tasty stuff.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Andrew Rich Gewürztraminer Les Vigneaux USA, Oregon/Washington, Columbia Gorge

Awesome nose here of apple and very nice mango scents. The mango is great! The palate is made up of some nice apple and cinnamon flavors. Surprisingly the mango doesn't come out. The acidity is quite nice as well. Unfortunately, There's an awkward note on the mid palate that dampens the experience a bit. Great flavors otherwise.
