Gaja tasting at A Southern Season

Tasted September 22, 2004 by JeffGMorris with 1,480 views

Introduction

Dena & I were invited to a free tasting put on for some of A Southern Season's better wine customers by Paterno Imports. Winer were served one at a time in the order shown, along with some good cheese, bread and pate. It was nice having a small ( 12 people ) event to try such highly regarded wines.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White
2001 Gaja Langhe Rossj Bass Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
85 points
Green tinged in color with lots of lemons, apples and minerals. A little Chardonnay butter on the nose but not too much. Long finish. Dry but has some richness. Very Burgundian. Mostly Chardonnay with a little Sauvignon Blanc. Surprisingly good! 50+11+9+8+7 = 85.
Red
2002 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Promis Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
80 points
Dark ruby in color this wine showed a weak vintage in it's lack of concentration. Lots of oak and toast mix with some cherry and berry. Oak tannins on the finish. 50+10+8+6+6 = 80.
Red
2001 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Magari Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
84 points
Deeper and richer than the '02 Promis, probably due to vintage variations. More berries. Unfortunately the finish is short and seems clipped and distracts greatly from the wine. 50+12+10+5+7 = 84.
Red
1998 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Rennina Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
88 points
Light purple. Tannins galore in this young wine but you can see the lineage from the '90 we had last month. Sour cherries. Some oak influence but not too heavy. Will improve with cellar time. 50+12+11+7+7.5 = 87.5
Red
1999 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
86 points
Light purple in color with violets and other flowers. Good inner mouth perfume for such a young wine. Cherries and a little petrol? Very good but not for $199. 50+11+11+7+7 = 86.
Red
1999 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì Tildìn Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
86 points
Purple colored and very smooth with good balance. Barrique aging/toastiness seems obvious but not excessive. 50+11+11+7+7 = 86.
Red
1999 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì San Lorenzo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
94 points
WOW! This blew away everything else on the table which seemed to be the consensus of everyone in attendance. Purple colored with a big nose of cherries and plums. Very rich and dense. Best wine of the night by far. 50+13+13+9+9 = 94.
Red
1999 Gaja Langhe Darmagi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
85 points
Dark purple. Big but tightly closed. Alcoholic. Definitely Italian with that cherry/acid profile. Would have been more interesting with some serious decanting time. 50+11+10+7+7 = 85.
