Introduction

Again, Nathan and I decended upon Waterford from atop a mountain, the Olde Smokey Mountain. My contribution to the slide was a lowly 1996 Ridge York Creek Petite Sirah.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2007 Smith-Madrone Riesling USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
green tea in the nose. grappa. minerality across the palate. the finish swells wonderfully. water weight and delicate florals. Medium acid. Who makes a better Riesling in this country???
White
2007 K Vintners Viognier USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Peach and flower blossom on the nose. quite a sweet floral note in the air tonight. Medium acid and a hint of chalk. drying note on the finish balances the perceived sweet nicely.
White
1994 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Reserve Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
nose shows the delicate side of spring water. Is there another side?? lightest wax note in the nose. mineral driven palate. overall quite a delicacy of profile. Medium acidity. After 1 hour - grape water on the nose. aged grape on the palate and a hint of almondine on the finish.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Doña Paula Cabernet Franc Alluvia Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Tupungato
Rich liquorice to the nose. blue to black fruited. deft oak on the nose. this wine has grill marks. full dash of wood on the palate. definitely a brightness of fruit on the nose. almost a tangy unsweetened Kool-Aid nose. rich and tight wood expression on the palate. why do people do this to Cabernet Franc???
Red
2005 Chappellet Cabernet Franc USA, California, Napa Valley
not so bellowing espresso. black raspberry fruit and the lightest element of gingerbread. wood shows lightly, but still youthfully.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Absolutely enthralled with the '03 Storybook Reserve. I agree with Ben in saying, quite possibly the best Zin I've had. The Amarone wasn't showing me what I wanted to see. That must be my problem.

Red
2005 Howell Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Beatty Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
very bright black raspberry with light lime leaf in the nose. hints of cinnamon with wonderfully present acid. great fruit expression.
Red
2003 Storybook Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Estate Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
rich black fruit. savory dark earth underbelly. nice structure with chocolate and ash across the palate. this wine has quite a way to go.
after an hour, it starts to show a tomato ketsup nose. tangy katsup. watermelon and tomato. Brain bender. green tannin backbone.
Red
2003 Speri Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Monte Sant'Urbano Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
rich old world dusty nose. lush fruit on the palate. showing some green stemmy notes that add class and complexity. Medium acid with a big lush profile. This is not what I thought I'd be getting with this wine today.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Casa Vinicola Canella Mimosa Italy
There's that metallic note in the nose that everyone raves about. Seriously, not so serious wine.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Grand Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
lively orange zest. light bread and lees notes. nice balance on the palate. a grateful hint of RS on the palate makes this wine so f***ing smooth.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
2005 Quinta Sardonia QS Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León
opaque black. rich dark blackberry. black top. very thick nose. black. black. black. Medium acid and big wood and tannin on the palate. beast of a wine, that after an hour or so opens to nice espresso and the sweetness of the new oak is starting to show.
Red
2004 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red USA, California, Napa Valley
huge black top. tabacco leafy. so aromatic tonight. nose doesn't quite show the sweet concentrated richness of the quinta sardonia. Medium acid with approachable tannin on the palate.
Red
1996 Ridge Petite Sirah York Creek USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
density of color and opacity. no signs of age on this baby. inky and almost black. thin rim. plum and the lightest note of raisination. a bit of jam in the nose. light iron and then some green grass. corn sweetness with a mellow mid palate. tannin is still dominant but not overpowering. there is a lightness of body that accompanies this monster structure and deep flavor profile. I will try my hardest to see if the other bottle I have can 'live forever.'
after 2 hours in the decanter it's beginning to show so gravelly and the florals are popping out of this one.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2006 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
cranberry, tar, cherry. very tight structure right now. this all ends with some comment from Dr. Hansen about p**ing on his wife's d***. obviously some context that i just don't have here.
Red
1999 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
chocolate and raspberry. showing hints of brett. brett as chocolate/peanut. let's blow this off. waxy/plasticine fruit. espresso on the palate and such imposingly tight tannin.

Flight 7 (2 notes)

The d'Yquem was amazing, but in the end I was left thinking about the amazing expression of sage oil and cranberry relish left by the Felluga Mocato Rosa.

Rosé - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Marco Felluga Moscato Rosa Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT
Manderine orange/tangerine and sage oil on the nose. Palate shows an astringent/tannic note on the finish. wild balance!!! cranberry!!! such a great unique nose. sangria and sage, cranberry relish. this is an exceptional and unique wine for sure.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2000 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
honied and spicy pollen a la botrytis. golden canary yellow. thought of brown sugar on the nose with light coconut milk. shows wonderful botrytis spice. waffles between white to brown grain toasted rice. white tea and apricot fruit on the nose as well. the palate shows wonderful juvenille purity and such the balance. I find florals to be floating in the background. meringue and toasted meringue.
