WFA 2009 Grange Vertical Tasting
Tasted October 22, 2009 by astroman with 625 views
Introduction
7 vintages of Grange for tasting for invited guests only. However many of the guests did not RSVP and managed to get into the tasting. However a big confusion before the start of the event which lead to a lot of unhappiness. Nevertheless, did manage to taste the Granges and it was worth the effort.
Flight 1 (1 note)
Red
1983 Penfolds Grange
Complex nose of tea leaves, orange peel, fresh, plum. Bit of sewage. Amazing tannins with excellent freshness with 26 years of age. Some morning freshness and subtle finish. Some sandal wood and herbs as CPT correctly described. After an hour an half in the glass, amazing.

Flight 2 (2 notes)
Preferred 91 over 90 as 91 seem more alive and enjoyable while the 90 was quite advanced.
Red
1990 Penfolds Grange
Hint of alcohol, sweet cherries, orange peel, vanish. More advanced as compared to 83. Tannins unresolved, lacking finish but still pretty good acid. Tea like finish. Does not seem to last any longer. Simply lacks structure.
Red
1991 Penfolds Grange
More intense with some fruits left. Some chocolate. Layered palate with lively acid and thick tannins. Complex and fresh with beautiful mouth feel. Very immense with beautiful soft fine tannins. More elegant as compared to 1990. Very balance and elegant my favorite of all.

Flight 3 (2 notes)
98 appears to be more drinking now as compared 98
Red
1998 Penfolds Grange
No much secondary aromas modern with sweetness or fruit forward nose with slight secondary on the back. Slightly advance but mouth coating tannins with lots of chocolate and mocha. Lingering finish. Aroma is more advanced as compared to palate which is very drinkable right now.
Red
1999 Penfolds Grange
Seemingly shut some fruits with dark red fruits but elegance. Slightly alcoholic but tannin was mouth coating thick. More mauscline as compared to earlier. Lots of fruits on the palate with hard velvet tannins. Probably need another 5 years before becoming approachable.
Flight 4 (2 notes)
2004 without a doubt head and shoulder above the 2002
Red
2002 Penfolds Grange
Kinda of frunky like nose, acrylic. Seemly advanced as compare to the earlier ones. Nail polish with seemly hollow aromas. Very modern palate with thick tannins rather shut but some orangery, violet taste. Good lingering finish but coating thick fine tannins. Needs more age before drinkable.

2004 Penfolds Grange
Very primary with capsicum, fruits, vanish but very elegant and soft. Cassis. Powerful but lots of Potential lots of complexity on the palate. Tons of flavours on the palate with good structure and form. Good Weight and beautifully balance on most aspect.
Closing
For drinking now 1991 is outstanding while 2004 probably will be outstanding in years to come.
