Bad medicinal aftertaste. Got better after a few days, but still not enjoyable.

Edit: I tried this again a few years ago, and it was a completely different bottle! Not sure if my original bottle was flawed, or the quality has drastically improved, but this is now an incredible $7 bottle!

3/10/21, 1:55 PM - I must have gotten a bad bottle in 2012! Have had this many (10x+) times since, and it's been *fantastic* at the $7 price point! Get a LBV at 2x the price (better), or a VP at 10x the price (definitely better), but this is still solid entry-level port.

The appearance is clear and deep ruby in colour. Tears are visible.

The nose is clean. The aromas have a medium(+) intensity and show notes of black fruit (black cherry, mulberry) and herbal characteristics (subtle medicinal character). Swirling reveals additional notes of black fruit (blackberry, bramble), mineral (subtle wet soil), and oak (subtle vanilla). The wine appears youthful.

On the palate the wine is dry with medium(+) acidity, medium(+) alcohol, and medium body. The medium(-) level tannins are ripe and soft. The flavours have a medium intensity and show notes of black fruit (mulberry, blueberry, black cherry, bramble). The finish has a medium length, showing additional notes of oak (subtle milk chocolate, subtle vanilla).

This is a good quality wine. The flavours have a good balance with the acidity. Warmth from the alcohol shows on the mid- and back-palate. The wine has a refreshing medium body style, with the tannins only showing very briefly before giving rise to the dominant acidity. The flavours have a reasonable concentration, contributing to the good length of the finish (a higher quality wine would be more concentrated and have a longer length). In its current state, the wine shows primary and secondary characteristics. The oak treatment is very subtle, allowing the simple black fruit core to show relatively undisturbed.

The wine drinks well now, but is not suitable for ageing. While the acid structure should support the wine for several years, it is unlikely that the balance with the alcohol will improve.

Not bad, but it had a slight off-edge finish, that never blew off :-(

1/7/13, 9:15 AM - I think this was a bad bottle, since 2.5 years later, our second bottle was excellent.
