Available in Germany for 12€-13 (equals 18+$) at Denn's Biomarkt (like all other products of Mas Des Quernes).
Syrah, Merlot, Cinsault, 14% alc.
Cherry red with brown and purple rims, medium slow legs.
Nose: Leather, wood, cassis, berries, vanilla, smooth. You can absolutely smell the presence of Syrah and Merlot. Quite nice, 86 p.
Palate: Berries, vanilla, spicy. Rather short finish, lacks depth. 83 p.
May improve within 1-2 years but for now this one is too expensive for what it offers.

5/30/22, 5:02 PM - The vintage 2011 seems to be so successful, seems to be that the wines only have to take some time for coming around. Just opened Mas des Quernes Le grand travers 2011 this evening. What a stunning appearance! Simply irrestable at this stage of development! What a treat, some 13 Euros or so a few years ago...

Zachys La Paulee Auction, Day One (Smith & Wollensky - New York NY): Dark cherry aromas with some earthiness. Blackberry and cherry flavors, also meaty and earthy, but an unmistakable green element is clear on finish.

9/9/16, 3:47 PM - Have this sleeping in cellar, and wondering about the comment of Chris_77 and the only diverging comment of yours. Sorry Chris, it's not only a mistake to empty the btls so early but to so with a Grand Cru. Simple truth IMO, given a trusted producer, this is still too young...

Burg Dinner with Friends (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Open and in decanter for several hours before being returned to bottle and brought to dinner. Lots of fruit concentration, but little spice or pleasure in general for now. A wine we think will turn into a charming Vosne 1er Cru based on experience, but surprisingly backward.

Love this wine. Had with chicken and mushrooms. Dark. Nice finish

From memory so no details (drank at Beth and Arthur's wedding reception, from a magnum). Good deep colour, not showing signs of serious age. Fruit. Classic claret with good supporting tannins still. This was excellent from a magnum. Drinking well now.

9/30/15, 4:39 PM - Just killed a bottle and it's well worth trying one, so delicious, very classy and classic style or call it old-style :)

2005 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers Pinot Noir
In the past 2 years I have had some not so good experiences with Faiveley from the old regime's Gevrey 1ers. First were some halves of the '02 Combe Aux Moines, next were some really awful halves of the '03 Cazetiers and now this. While all different, they all seemed to have too much extraction, dark roasted fruits, and too much oak leading to drying tannins. Hard to explain, unless they were all subject to bottle variation, and/or bad shipping or storage. This is the least bad, but I was expecting so much more. Ironically, the '10 version is the antithesis, all elegance and really refined tannins, just not as good as say the Bruno Clair Version.

9/27/15, 3:32 PM - Oh Jesus would wait with the 2005 at least some 10 years or so, depending on what numbers you are storing. Perhaps the 09s are starting to drink a decade earlier. Be patient with this high flyer...

  • Nubian commented:

9/30/15, 3:06 PM - Well possessing only one Cazetier and it is from 2005. Have hidden it deep down in the cellar taxing it to live another 20 yrs at least. Then I will be around 70 ;) but it will be worth it I guess. Hard to wait I know, but now I would not touch. My btl is from Serafin. Cheers Nubian

2002 Château Talbot St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend
Color: Almost no signs of aging whatsoever. Nose: Wild berries, a hint of whipped cream. Quite expressive bouquet. Mouth: Consistent with the nose. Too thin. Too bitter. Not very enjoyable.
  • Nubian commented:

9/24/15, 3:04 PM - The 02s don't seem to be the most early drinkable Bordeaux for last decade, the signs are giving a hint to forget this one for another 3-5 years perhaps. Will try my first bottle of the well described 2000 this christmas.

8/16/15, 4:29 PM - Overall, would suggest this moderately priced wine is a treat. Am very excited to initially taste the 2005 Phelan. Nevertheless will wait some years.

Getting better with time. The wood is better integrated now and the wine shows a medium body and classic bordeaux earthiness. The bouquet is dominated by black fruit and some coffee and dark chocolate. Overall a good PQR.
Time will tell, if it improves further.
  • Nubian commented:

2/7/15, 4:01 PM - Be sure this wine will ameliorate with time. Haven't touched my bottles yet. 2005 is widely unapproachable by now. This regards the 02 and 04 vintages too. So don't wonder about 2005... For now, the 98s St. Emilion have to be approached...

  • Nubian commented:

8/14/15, 5:23 PM - Depends on storing conditions too... have opened one and on day 3 there is a trend towards binding the mild acid at opening... the result is some power combined with burgundian finesse in the finish. Decant strongly recommended.

2012 Arianna Occhipinti SP68 Nero d'Avola e Frappato Terre Siciliane Red Blend

This nice medium weight blend is strangely less than the sum of its parts. Arianna's Frappato is light, lively, sharp, focused. Her Nero d'Avola is darker, creamy rich with minerals and spice.

This blend is neither!

Rather its just that. A mash up of spice, acids, fruits, creamy side tastes and earth. There is no central focus to this bottle. Certainly easy to drink but where is the statement, the definition, the structure? I guess sometimes a bottle of wine is just a bottle of wine. Duh.
  • Nubian commented:

8/9/15, 2:33 PM - Just trying the 2011 which surprisingly is coming up on day 2. Would give the wine lot of air or some storage. The aim is a wine of very own kind indeed, blueberry fruited, bold and of much interest.

12/14/14, 3:06 PM - Thinking about the declared drinking horizont, the just consumed 2003 is drinking very well right now, winery considers 2012 as Holding date. The fruit is still dominant. So, some patience may help...

From half bottle, no decant, ready within 30 minutes. Deep youngish color, purple reflets. Fantastic, balanced, slightly toasted bouquet, earthy, dark fruits in palate with medium to long, consistent finish. Much better than expected.

2005 Château Beaumont Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend
The first bottle of 5 dozen. Very disappointing indeed. Overripe and over extracted. At first, chocolate and stewed plums. Muddled and not particularly pleasant. I don't think it will improve. Will try another bottle or two but I think it's one to sell. Another casualty of the Parker influence? Such a pity, the 2000 was terrific quality for the money. Got quite a bit of the 09 too, I wonder if that's as bad as this too.
  • Nubian commented:

9/25/14, 2:21 PM - Hi John, having the 06 in my glass and wondering what this aftertaste is about, would think this is very interesting stuff which is just evolving. For now it is a light wine which needs certain notice and perhaps even sympathy. Next time it has a real chance to metamorphose into an awful even if extraordinary wine. Would approach your 05 - of which 6 btls are sleeping in my cellar - step by step. Good luck.

Van Volxem Tasting (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel): This was really good for a cheap, entry level wine from a less than heralded vintage. It had a lovely nose, very pretty, with little touches of chalk dancing around pretty accents of chamomile and sweet herb and fresh cut white flowers on a base of Fuji apples. The palate had a lovely, almost pitch perfect balance to it, with gentle acidity running through simple but beautifully detailed flavours of green apples laced with flowers and stone fruited notes. It finished with just a little suggestion of mineral and a grip of citrus lime. Very nice. It is a great summer afternoon wine, great for drinking early.

Concentrated with a very good balance between acidity and sweetness, But one way or another the wine doesn't strike me as extremely special. It has finesse, but I miss some elegance. Maybe I should have waited until 2020, but I didn't and this was my last bottle so…over and out.
  • Nubian commented:

8/28/14, 3:48 PM - seems to me it was unresistable stuff to drink right now... for myself I am a little sad having just emptied my 2008 Scharzhofberger normal btls. Only one magnum left, but this will be kept for sure...
