My last 750 - still in really great shape, but showing a little maturity.

12/1/21, 3:47 PM - Probably could have been better stated as ‘getting a little tired’. Bottle variation most likely, and certainly not as bright as the previous bottle we’d consumed.

Easily 92+. I definitely get the sappy, balsamic and baked fruit notes others have reported. Yum.

11/24/20, 6:26 PM - We drank this alongside a vaguely tandoori style rotisserie chicken (homemade). Decanted approx. 90 mins-2 hrs. Plenty of accolades sure, but 2012 was a hot vintage and those concentrated flavors tend to show.

On the nose, I found dark, mature fruit, showing crushed black cherry and ripe strawberry, giving way to moist soil, fall leaves, tobacco, and minerals, with hints of savory herbs and old leather. On the palate, soft textures were contrasted by brisk acids, with dried red fruits, a sour citrus twang, and saturating minerality, in a wiry, tense, yet wonderfully satisfying expression. The finish was long, resonating on dried floral tones and minerals that just went on and on.

9/7/19, 3:53 PM - Thanks for the recent note. I have one more bottle of this and it is great to hear that it is going strong. I would like to save it for its 30th birthday next year.

Others may like this more, I still fine the wine a bit blocky. Plenty of pedigree and I really liek the complexity of the nose with all the herbs and earthy savory notes around the dark red fruits. It's just structurally it lacks a silken togetherness that I really want. Maybe it's too young and this will all sort out, or maybe there won't be enough fruit to come together with the structure in the exact manner I'm looking for. I have one more bottle that I'm going to wait several years before opening. Maybe, unless I change my mind and have a big hunk of meat.

3/7/19, 5:00 PM - Follow your instincts and put that last bottle away -- forget about it until the back half of the next decade. I have tasted Rancias going back to 1990 and they are very good wines in their youth but on a different plane entirely after their 15th birthdays.

Heat damage, as sadly suspected
  • weinmatt commented:

8/28/18, 8:16 AM - I sourced it from one of the Italian stores where I have had wine sent to the U.S. in the past. It was a combination of factors principally their importer/shipper's lack of care that resulted in the wine not being held safely in the warehouse and released to UPS on Friday evening of a heat wave, and then it sat in the UPS truck until end of day Monday while it hit 100 here.

Funky nose; dirty; overly mature; bad fruit.

8/12/18, 5:06 AM - Sounds like the bad bottle I drank a couple few weeks ago.

I was asked through a message on here about this wine, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to respond. Weinmatt - if you want to send another note explaining how, I will do so.

Very happy with this Garagiste purchase. I’m a wine wannabe and rate it whether I like it, really like it, so so, or don’t like. I really liked this.
  • weinmatt commented:

7/2/18, 8:22 AM - This was exactly what I was hoping for. I think with the "mix up" people (myself included) are pretty suspect about this wine - Garagiste does not have the best reputation in this regard - and the best way to know whether to push back is to hear from someone who has drank a bottle. I see what's in your cellar and I'd hardly call you a wannabe - if this were junk wine, you'd have known it. Nice to meet you and welcome to the community.

Reasonably good for a $14 Costco special... not going to gain much in complexity. Use for cellar defense.
  • weinmatt commented:

12/29/17, 3:34 PM - Pretty much. Maybe 10 minutes of air unlocked the fruit and we drank a good bit of it right out of the bottle. The rest sat for a couple hours (and was consumed without noting marked improvement).

Rich, bombastic, turbo charged, unbalanced, and overtly sweet McLaren Shiraz. What cuisine could you possibly pair this with as it would even overwhelm a char grilled rib eye. And as a cocktail wine,it presents itself as too ripe and over extracted. Took 2 sips and the rest went down the drain. I will stick to Barolo / Barbaresco.
  • weinmatt commented:

4/19/17, 6:04 PM - With this wine, you just have to know what you are opening and act accordingly. Big steak, big starches, etc. I stopped buying Shiraz a few years ago but had bought a bunch of this and I'm still working it off.

87 on opening, barely drinkable on day 2.
If you have this in your cellar - drink now and all at once - It's fading fast. Not bad at pnp with mild tannins and some fruit
I made the mistake of saving half the bottle overnight and on day 2 it was no good.
Hard to imagine a Napa with pedigree that aged so fast and so poorly
  • weinmatt commented:

    9/15/16, 7:58 AM - Wuh-oh. That doesn't bode well.
