Birthday opening that really disappointed. Have enjoyed this many times but this bottle. Wasn't corked or cooked. Tasted like a lesser 1975 Cali cab that was well past its drinking window.....mono-dimensional.

3/26/22, 11:33 AM - Thats usually the question with bottles like this one. This was acquired from a highly regarded cellar via auction in 1997. Was a bottom of neck fill at that time. I only buy from cellars that have all to their offered wines with neck fills. Had one a few years ago that was acquired with this one but it was classic 82 Lafite. The cork was soaked though there had been zero leakage and the cork was firmly locked into the neck. Could be the original owner sold a number if bottles from different cases/sources. Very sad. Of the thousands of bottles I have opened, I guess that no more than 1% are off, corked or flawed.

1997 Scherrer Winery Zinfandel Old and Mature Vines Scherrer Vineyard Alexander Valley
I've had a number of Scherrer's over time - some good, some too overripe, but this bottle was one of the best bottles of zin i've ever had. Tons of depth and complexity without any heft or weight. Opened with Mrs. VeV we were blown away by how good it was and are still talking about it two days later. As good as any of the old Ridge bottlings I've opened. Maybe better. Wow.

Upfront aromas of forest floor followed by some dark cherry and leather. On the palate the acidity and tennis trump the flavors....needs time. Some dried mushroom, earthiness, dried rose petals lead into a lengthy fine finish.
