It's aways a big gamble when you buy and open a really old wine from less than a first rate producer, from a secondary region and from a year most people don't know anything about in that region. It is always a good policy to expect a disappointment when you pop the cork. But like every big gamble, when the bet comes through the rewards are tantalizing. This was more than i capsule have ever hoped for. The cork (albeit short) was firm and in one pice. Always a good start. And then the perfume came. The room filled with gorgeous light scent of red fruits and florals. The wine itself was very light but muddy in color and completely bricked. But it was magical. Light, almost ethereal, but so young and fresh. It was all primary aromas - cherries, and other red fruits. Great acidity and just perfect tannic backbone. Drank over an hour this kept getting better. Sad that this note will likely not be read by anybody as there is so little of this wine left in the world. But the experience was truly magnificent. Well done you, old Italian man who put this in a bottle 58 years ago!

White
2014 Sandlands Chenin Blanc California
Just singing. Very typical chenin, but yet light and elegant, with racy acidity and white fruits, all in perfect balance. The first of my 2014s to open, looking forward to the rest!

4/6/17, 8:12 PM - Hard for me to say as I have little experience with both Californian Chenin or Sandlands. If I had to guess I'm not sure how much better it would get (if at all), but it should hold at this level for a few years. Hope this helps.

The real stunner of the night, this was a rather masculine Barbaresco. Tons of cherry and rose on the nose, very balanced and integrated in terms of tannin. Some beautiful secondaries are shining through as well. This was dangerously drinkable, delicious and complex. Everything you might hope for in a good bottle of wine. Confetti in the sky :)
