2018 Weingut Mertz Riesling vom Porphyr Rheinhessen

Stone fruit, slate, mineral, high acid
  • Bakerbd commented:

2/6/21, 8:53 AM - If you're planning ahead, I'd give it an hour open!

Red
1991 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera Reserva Tempranillo
1/12/2021 - Bakerbd Likes this wine:
91 points
Dark cherry, vanilla, tobacco, dusty tannin, lots of sediment
  • Bakerbd commented:

1/13/21, 6:54 PM - Stood up for about a week, did not decant (though that would have been a good idea in retrospect!)

Red
2009 Drinkward Peschon Cabernet Sauvignon Entre Deux Mères Napa Valley
12/18/2019 - Bakerbd Likes this wine:

Ripe black fruits, cigar, fine tannin, plush. Riper and more modern than I was expecting, but still great with a steak
  • Bakerbd commented:

12/20/19, 1:40 PM - @Mark1npt interesting, I don't have other experience with this wine so not sure. I bought this bottle from K&L (who I assume acquired it from a private collection), so no way to know about storage.

Red
2016 William & Mary Cabernet Sauvignon Shifflett Ranch Oak Knoll District

Red currant and cedar, pencil lead, layers of flavor. Too young but couldn't help myself from trying a bottle
  • Bakerbd commented:

12/3/18, 9:32 PM - That was my current gut-impression score; expect it to get even better!

Red
2016 Pax Syrah Sonoma Hillsides Russian River Valley
3/11/2018 - Bakerbd Likes this wine:

Closed at first, but eventually becomes a violet-scented, almost impenetrably black, iron-laden, peppery, dark-fruited classic syrah
  • Bakerbd commented:

3/12/18, 4:35 PM - Only a few hours with the bottle open, but I definitely think that it could handle a long decant. That said, not planning to open either of my two remaining bottles for a few years if possible!

Red
1990 Serafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Pinot Noir
3/11/2018 - Bakerbd Likes this wine:

Autumnal - forest floor and decaying leaves. Not much fruit left.
  • Bakerbd commented:

3/11/18, 8:33 PM - @jmoore431 - agreed! The aged "forest floor" aspect was what I liked most about the wine. Score was due to more the wine being fairly simple/one-note rather than lacking fruit! My (quick after-the-fact) note didn't convey that well.

Red
2014 Dirty and Rowdy Mourvèdre FAMILIAR California
5/21/2015 - Bakerbd Likes this wine:

Bing cherry, boysenberry, earth, dusty tannin. Med acid, med - body, refreshing, best with a light chill. Have heard D&R wines compared to cru beaujolais and that seems appropriate here.
  • Bakerbd commented:

5/22/15, 7:40 AM - Pnp, though it certainly got better with air, so I would decant for a couple hours if you have the time!

White
2009 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets Chardonnay

Awesome white burgundy. Minerality. Nice oak and full body. Precise. Crisp floral notes and white fruits. Tasted from magnum. Bouley. NYC.

8/29/14, 2:06 PM - Nice - have heard great things about PYCM! I have a bottle of one of his village wines, will need to try soon
