5/6/24, 8:02 PM - Great note
5/7/24, 5:14 AM - Polished.. yes.. another good desciptor
5/6/24, 11:47 AM - It could mean… delivery day!
5/5/24, 6:16 PM - Did you try it on PNP or only after 5 days in the fridge?
4/29/24, 11:46 AM - Dang. I pulled another one myself to check in on! Alongside a 2005 magdelaine which I already know will be tight.
5/1/24, 7:52 AM - I had a 750ml that was so good I finished it without realizing. And then another was funky and tannic. Seems like I got lucky with that first 750ml
5/5/24, 10:38 AM - Curiosity got me and I opened one. Per your note and others... and because I dropped the bottle by accident... I decanted the wine for a couple hours and then double decanted back into the bottle... was quite lithe on the palate and I found it enjoyable (no particularly hard tannin etc., albeit only some fruit). Really enjoyed it with classic bistro fair (chicken liver mousse, steak frites, etc.).
4/30/24, 4:39 PM - Never had jackfruit before - how would you describe it?
5/3/24, 6:20 PM - Thank you! Not what I expected
5/2/24, 11:04 AM - Some say beta needs decades. Others say ready with a short decant. Confusing!
5/3/24, 5:38 PM - I remember enjoying 2016 Vare on release and finding 2014 Montecillo to be monolithic. Made me think Vare was the wine to be enjoyed in youth (but stock away the rest!) and Montecillo was the one to be forgotten! Thankfully my wine fridge is full so I am able to wait a couple years more on my Betas!
5/2/24, 2:46 PM - I would certainly open a 2014, an early maturer. I like checking in on cappellano as I generally feel they can suddenly advance (low sulphur?). Eg this 2015 could use some years to soften, but I feel I got a good look at it. Would go very well with your duck tortellini!
4/29/24, 8:52 AM - How did it comp to the Greer?
4/26/24, 5:42 AM - Did you prefer 2019 to 2005?
4/26/24, 7:02 AM - Thank you. I prefer 2005 to 2019, but have not had them side-by-side
4/26/24, 8:50 AM - You can see my notes on the 2019. I feel 2019 is more ripe, hedonistic, and alcohol wine than I like. Straddles the middle of Napa and Bordeaux for me. I still scored it very well, as it was still in balance.. but an overall expression I wasn't enamored with. A more recent bottle - that was slightly too cool - showed better. That would be expected given my concerns of 'bigness' (a cooler temp brining more stoniness to the wine / masking the alcohol) but then lose a bit of expressiveness. I've had a couple 2005s and I have experienced great bottle variation.. one was just smashingly delicious and the other a bit too tannic... but overall I like the more classic approach of the '05. You can see my note on '20 as well.. I found that to be a very different animal to '19. I suspect I will like '23 (if its a lower alc '19 / less savory than '20).
4/26/24, 6:48 PM - Thanks! I bought a couple 21 but haven’t tried. My hope is it presents earlier drinking (that 2020 is going to need a LONG time!). Curious where 2023 prices.
4/27/24, 10:34 AM - Below are UK prices + $20 (all in USD). Needs to be 20% to just get down to 2019. Go 30% and then its same price as 2021. Which means 25% to get in between 2019-2021. But then what happens to 2022.....? 2022 $2002021 $1402020 $1952019 $165
4/28/24, 12:34 PM - Can Aussies not buy IB from UK or Hong Kong in bond, and ship direct ex-VAT?
4/20/24, 11:04 AM - 'chiseled' as in the opposite of flabby
4/16/24, 2:05 PM - Taking one for the team
4/14/24, 3:47 PM - Do you recall what the alc % on label is for this wine?
4/15/24, 3:33 PM - Thank you! 2016 reminded me about 2001, but it is 15%…
4/13/24, 11:48 AM - Don't visit Napa!
3/28/24, 6:11 AM - I did realize Economou blew up so much! I think I heard him discuss some reserve wines he was going to release one day. This must be one of them. What was pricint?
4/5/24, 2:18 PM - $150 in US
3/27/24, 4:31 AM - Love your notes
3/25/24, 6:17 AM - when is the next one
3/10/24, 6:27 AM - I’m in a similar spot as your original note!
3/11/24, 5:28 AM - For me, I thought the wine was fine (I didn't get the heat, so much as a certain sharpness on the finish that didn't resonate with me). And its priced well to be very QPR. But I've found 2019 Leoville and Brane Cantenac to fit me better, also awesome QPR. However, there are great tasters who love the DDC and think it will head somewhere appropriately delicious so maybe we just need to wait 15 years...!
3/9/24, 6:10 AM - 2016s are shut down
3/3/24, 6:21 PM - Make it up to NYC! @zohowine
3/1/24, 1:30 PM - what a note
2/28/24, 9:38 AM - Good note. I like the word play you used here as a descriptor "firm, but fine grained". I know exactly what you mean, and will try to use that descriptor going forward.
2/24/24, 7:47 PM - Did you try it on open, or only after some air?
2/12/24, 1:15 PM - But did he like it? :P
2/21/24, 5:45 AM - My comment was a joke! I own a case.. looking forward to trying it one day!
2/19/24, 8:21 AM - What a lovely comment to read nearly 4 years later! A few thoughts... * Great article from William Kelley talking about all the work Bouley has put in iteratively, and he talks specifically about the iterations from 2002. Great article.* On the Barolo theme, in Spring 2020 or so I had his 2017 Rugiens which struck me as having some quality that made me think Giuseppe Rinaldi come to mind. Purity of fruit and that sauve texture perhaps? It is surprising to me that wine can still be acquired for 130 USD out of UK. If I had more $ I would buy those! I know Thomas himself had it last year for Thanksgiving! * The barrel changes he made in 2021 I think are a game changer. They make the wines more supple and softer, especially in though. Where I think Thomas wines from 2015-2017 need so much time, I suspect the recent vintages will show better and drive even greater commercial interest* Unfortunately, the commercial interest and pricing makes it hard to buy in same quality as I used to. But he is one that I will still seek to purchase every year. The value is honestly still there. His 1er cru are better than Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne, which trades for $250-300. And to your point on appellations, here I am comparing Pommard to Vosne and saying they are better wines! It is unfortunate we will never see him make a Chambertin, etc. I would like to see a Beze or Roche made by Thomas - the intensity would be something! If you read this far and make it to NYC, I would be happy to open one of my 2020s with you. They have needed the right occassion!
5/23/23, 8:31 AM - What I realized recently is Burlotto also doesn't throw off VA like othersI suspect Acclivi started shutting down as well
5/23/23, 12:50 PM - When do you think they will open again?
2/15/24, 2:55 PM - The bottle I just had is fantastic and better than the one I had in 2023
2/11/24, 1:44 PM - What is this wine? A BdV Riserva?
1/20/24, 9:08 PM - what is alc %?
1/20/24, 10:25 AM - How did it change over air?
1/20/24, 7:03 PM - I've never had one over 3 days. If you see my note on 2018.. first one I thought drink immediately.. 2nd one I said has structure to age a little. OP seems to call this more structured (but not mention of tannin) which leads me to believe can be cellared a bit. Personally, I think they are versatile (which makes them popular) - refreshing in youth and serious enough to age 5 years and re-evaluate.
1/18/24, 8:00 PM - Can you take down this note till I clear my only bottle at auction
1/1/24, 6:23 PM - Houston Wine Merchant?
12/28/23, 6:19 PM - 1.5 hrs just bottle open, in glass, or decanted?
12/27/23, 8:09 PM - there is separate category for 48
12/24/23, 4:21 PM - Tasting note!? I did have one pulled, and will hold off
12/22/23, 7:43 PM - How much air did you give it? Did you find it transformed with air? When I last opened one a few years ago, it was shrill on open and smoothed out over next 30 minutes. Was more red berried as well.
11/27/23, 7:28 PM - I have a group purchase going for 3 cases dm me @zohowine I have up to a case available
12/16/23, 10:59 AM - The wine is available in France, and not too expensive
12/15/23, 8:00 PM - Great note!
12/15/23, 8:25 PM - You nailed the "hardness on the finish, that I think will soften with age" that I could not articulate. That phrase resonated with me.
12/11/23, 8:25 PM - was this the riserva?
12/11/23, 8:42 PM - I can vaguely remember drinking these in youth and thinking how full of flavor (fruit) they were. I wonder if this wine is particularly shut down?
12/10/23, 9:36 AM - Great note that nails this wine
12/2/23, 10:11 AM - What air treatment would you give this? A few notes suggest double decanting, others suggest a pop and pour. My bias is the former.
12/1/23, 10:58 AM - I enjoyed your note, although your point score seems a few points lower than the note would suggest (when I think about the context of how people use an 89 on Cellar Tracker). It reads to me more like a 92-94 than an 89. Just sharing this feedback as this is your first CT note.
9/16/23, 8:09 AM - I don't drink much white wine. I have another bottle that I am going to try as well out of curiosity. There is also the idea that Aligote can age, so this wine should pick up some added complexity over the next ten years.
9/16/23, 11:50 AM - These were just recently bottled. So a few months would help resolve some differences as well.
11/28/23, 5:23 AM - A second bottle showed differently than my first. I'm now also a bit curious!
11/26/23, 6:09 PM - I just posted a note on a 375ml. Got a lot of the same notes! But didn't find it as tannic as you did.
11/22/23, 8:26 AM - Roy, I hope you live that long as well. It wasn't the tannins specifically, but the wine felt very coiled. And this was about a double-decant all day. Felt like there was a lot of phenolic material there, that would unfurl more expressiveness and complexity in another 10 years - with the acid structure to support that. But I ain't no winemaker! Just a dude posting on the Internet.
11/17/23, 5:35 PM - How many years will this age?
11/10/23, 4:13 PM - How much air? sounds like a PNP? Wondering if that was related to the tartness
11/9/23, 3:16 PM - What price?
11/8/23, 8:29 AM - A few other notes for this wine in recent vintages comment re "fizz on the tongue" or spritz. Not sure why, but the bottle I tried was not flawed and had a lot of spritz that I wish was decanted out prior to trying. Btw, this was a beautiful wine. It was tasted at end of a long tight and not properly decanted, but I was curious to try again. Maybe in the magical 2023 vintage... but I just picked up a case of 2020 lafarge.. which will be delightful.
11/8/23, 9:44 AM - Are they hard to buy? A bunch at auction this week per WS. When do you think them? the one yesterday struck as me as being interesting to age. How do you compare to Whitcraft or ABC?
11/7/23, 7:18 AM - I've had a few 2019s on release and they were quite generous and fruit forward, including the SHL. I frankly was surprised to see this 2019 be so unforgiving.
11/1/23, 11:12 AM - want to buy one?
11/3/23, 2:38 PM - :)I love your notes. I think this is the highest rated - by you - that I own
10/31/23, 7:20 PM - I am pretty sure I paid more than that on release
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
