9/27/17, 8:42 AM - BTW. I am only sharing the knowledge I have learned online. I have not had any 13 or 14 wines yet. Other then Langhes.
9/27/17, 7:20 AM - Like 2011, 2014 is a much better vintage in Barbaresco, then in Barolo.2013 has been positively reviewed almost everywhere.
9/26/17, 9:50 AM - Aldo declassified for two reasons. Some of the crus weren't worthy, at least 3. Also he thought he needed to protect the Torre, which he says is the most important bottling.
7/16/20, 7:44 PM - srh. It has been daunting to keep up with 10 Barbarescos coming every year. The ris.are a staple for us but only bought the Ovello in 2014. There are the 2015 and 2016 riservas coming and probably the 2017s.
2/14/20, 7:16 AM - Pretty much how I felt about this wine when we tasted it at the winery last fall. Took a bottle back to our room and drank it with dinner that night.Great note.
1/21/21, 9:02 PM - Nothing wrong with early drinking vintages when you are 64.
1/20/21, 8:29 PM - Thanks for the note. I have really liked 2014 for Barbaresco. I have heard that the rains that hit the rest of Piemonte missed Barbaresco.
5/5/23, 7:46 AM - Interesting comment on critics. I am not sure who you refer to, but there are many who qualify. Gone are the days where incompetence was treated swiftly, as Dr Jay Miller was at the WA when his first report on Spanish wines was released.I find Decanter to be the worst, why so many 97s? Very nice note.
8/17/20, 9:31 PM - Just added 5 bottles to my inventory, what a lovely sentiment.
9/18/19, 11:04 PM - Great note. Can’t score it 100, you have to leave room for Pradeaux.
7/10/20, 7:28 AM - Good morning. I see you are in Vancouver. Have you been in on the BCLDB Fontodi blowout? I also grabbed the Henriot, and liked your note. I think I liked it a lot more then you.Cheers.David
5/22/20, 6:46 AM - Great note. I agree with you completely. LdH wines are not made in the vineyard they are made in the cellar. Not lin a modern way but still it is the influence of the building and the techniques (or lack of) that makes it so reliable.Do you agree?
5/23/20, 8:55 AM - Hi Craig. Just realized you are in the TC. My wife and I spent a week there a couple of years ago. What a great town. Do you buy wine from Sunfish Cellars?
5/26/20, 6:19 AM - Yes Craig. That would be great. We loved Spoon and Stable, liked Bachelor Farmer but loved their Cafe, had a great time at Bar Lagrasa, and loved the Corner Table. Also ate at a huge place by a waterfall called Saltaire maybe, the food was good but the shear number of people they served was staggering.
9/28/18, 8:16 PM - Totally agree. Even Lindsay Graham would like this one.
3/5/19, 9:53 AM - Indeed. Well said. The Wagner Family has gone so far astray.
4/29/18, 8:02 PM - I like this note. I find the same thing. I've had the 99 from Magnum a few times, the latest 18 months ago and it will never be truly ready. Sadly it also wasn't that nice early on either. Unlike the wines from the current decade.
1/27/18, 8:26 AM - I totally agree, I have only had the wine 2 or 3 times and I don't regret only buying a couple of bottles. I found the search for the "Riserva" lots to be just stupid. Also the wine seemed so angry I only have one left and will probably drink it in a blind vertical with the delicious Torres they are making lately.BTW. Magnums of the 99 seem to exhibit the same characters that damn the 06.
9/25/19, 10:28 AM - Oh yes. Seems like it could age for decades.
10/9/20, 9:16 PM - How has the North Loop done in these strange times. My wife and I spent a week there a few years ago and loved it. Especially Spoon and Stable as well as the Bachelor Farmer which I hear is gone. I loved their cafe. This is a great wine, so intense and rich. I agree with your note. All the best.Dave
8/22/20, 7:07 AM - Thanks srh. I think the wine is just a bit tight right now. There were no signs of it drying out in my opinion.I have always enjoyed your unique tasting notes. Our tastes seem to align in most cases.Cheers.David
5/28/21, 7:13 AM - Thanks for the note. And the right glasses are (drum roll please)?Honestly want to know what you think. I use Riesling glasses or Bordeaux glasses for most Champagne.
10/21/22, 2:19 PM - Planning ahead. I like that.
10/22/21, 8:05 AM - I had this yesterday at a blind tasting. Your note describes my thoughts so much better than I could. Amongst a great lineup of Barolo and Barbaresco this wine stood out. So floral and mineral driven and such a pleasure to drink.Cheers.Dave
3/5/15, 5:37 PM - I had a bottle last night and really enjoyed it. I think poor shipping or storage could have affected your bottle or multiple bottles. I think after the Faively incident RMP is very wary of potential inequities. That being said I do believe there has been some score creep towards higher numbers.
3/5/15, 2:58 PM - Perhaps you had a bad bottle. Your comments about Eric Soloman and Mr Parker seem pretty strong. Luckily most people will not take you seriously.
2/9/23, 6:30 PM - Joost. It is a pleasure. All the Best.David
7/26/23, 7:43 AM - Thank for your comment. Overall the wines in this vertical, put on by a friend, were better than I expected. I have been disappointed by this bottling for years. I still think the 13 and 10 are poor wines from very good vintages. The QPR here is terrible. I think the 18 is fine but would buy Le Cinciole CC for half the cost. There are so many good wines from 2018. YMMV.Cheers.Dave
12/26/23, 10:45 AM - Thank you. I corrected it.
12/6/12, 12:21 PM - I think some people mistake the Mouvedre nose for brett, especially in Beaucastel.
10/1/21, 6:18 AM - Sean. Yes this seems to be in a great place right now and it is still the 2017. We drank a bottle on the same night as the much more expensive 2018 Drouhin Vaudon village wine and preferred this.
10/25/15, 4:40 PM - Hi geppetto. Thanks for the comment. I agree with your comments on the ripeness of the VT and the Donjon. On release the Donjon seemed balanced but tastes since then have shown some ripeness. I've found other wines from 07 to be unbearable, especially the Pegau and St. Prefert Favier. The Marquis Wine Cellar had the 11 and still has the blanc. I never buy VT. every time I have the wine I love it but always find other wines better buys.
4/2/21, 7:13 PM - I noticed you had a bottle Jim. The BCLDB had it on sale last month.
3/5/20, 8:22 PM - I wonder what I meant? It is rather strange .Cheers.David
3/9/20, 10:18 AM - sternowl. Thank you. Sadly the chicken was crazy hot. Wish I chose a level or two lower then extra hot.All the best.
10/24/18, 5:55 PM - We bought 3 more today and 3 08 Gravonias. We had the Cubillo last night at the Harvest Vine. Did you see my note on the Challuer blanc?
1/1/24, 7:51 AM - Love to. How nice of you. I have a Mag of 07 Montegrossi San Marcellino to contribute.
3/17/21, 8:28 PM - Thanks. I think it was just a bad couple of bottles from the same source.
8/22/20, 7:04 AM - Hi srh. Thanks for the note, I will definitely have a look. I am always looking for more information about Tuscan wines. Coincidentally I watched some of Monica Larner’s interview of Giovanni Mazzei and his father yesterday. It was not great.
3/7/21, 7:26 AM - Hi PSPatrick. Thanks for your comment. I agree, the Fontodi CC always seems ready to drink. Isole takes a bit of time to develop. I’m not sure I will purchase either in this vintage for the cellar. For that matter I may skip most 2017s. The 18s of other CCs are on the shelf and delightful.David
8/2/20, 7:39 AM - I would say NO. It could hang on for a long time though. I think of this wine as ready now, I think of grippy wines like Flaccianello as candidates for that kind of age. The finish on this wine was very balanced and the concentration was medium at most.
1/27/22, 7:50 AM - Hi Blair. I thought this bottle was quite approachable and had a lot going for it. I think it is in the early drink ability stage. I have found a few 2012s this way. Same for most 2011 Barbaresco.
6/4/20, 8:04 PM - Glad to hear from you. I love this wine in every vintage. I have never found it grassy. I have a 2018 Ava for this weekend.Cheers.
7/3/21, 3:30 PM - Jim. Do you like them? Which size do you have?
10/23/20, 9:24 AM - Aaronmaxwell. I totally agree with your note. I have been holding onto the last 2 bottles I bought hoping they would develop into what the 08 has become. I think another 4 or 5 years.I too love Pegau and have always appreciated the off vintages. In fact I hated the 03 and 07. Both were far too ripe for me. CheersDavid
4/17/20, 7:21 AM - Jeffmudd. Thanks for the note. I felt the same way about the 08. It did develop very nicely. I drank most of mine too soon. I love off vintage Pegau.
10/9/20, 1:18 PM - I suppose so. It depends what you are looking for It isn't my style so I am glad it was my last.
8/6/21, 9:13 AM - I expected it to be a lot bigger in every way and it seemed nicely balanced. I wouldn’t buy it again without the free glass.
4/10/20, 7:21 AM - That seems like the way these will end up. Dull, sweet and disappointing.
1/2/20, 7:47 AM - Sorry to hear about your Doggie. As hard as the loss is it is out weighed by the enjoyment having a dog brings. Thanks for the note.
5/23/23, 5:00 PM - I wouldn’t worry. This happens every now and then. I loved the first bottle.
12/19/19, 11:45 AM - Great note. This wine is usuall elegant and Burgundian. The 2014 was an outlier being ripe and a darling of the critics. Ian d'Agata scored it 97 points. I was 9 points lower and did not buy any.
5/24/23, 2:36 AM - Hi Jim. I have had good luck with K and L auctions pre-Covid.
8/5/22, 4:44 PM - Thank you. I would say in the middle. It shows some nice development. I think it was recently released. William Kelly says it’s early so I would go with that.
5/13/19, 7:10 AM - Nice note. We had a great dinner at Otona a few months ago when I visited LA. I loved the food and the room. We took a 2001 Riojnas Monte Real .
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
