5/9/24, 3:08 AM - Wow that is quite a statement if you think it would be hard to distinguish from the other KE offerings… can’t wait to try.
5/8/24, 3:06 AM - What makes you think drink up sooner than later?
5/8/24, 11:15 AM - Thanks Jeff, that is very helpful. I should probably drink up soon, especially if the fruit is already being overcome by the earthiness. I do remember that this is a very different and lighter/redder style than more typical Syrah’s, so what you say makes sense!
5/5/24, 5:39 AM - Curious was this a reconditioned bottle or an original? It seems especially relevant for this vintage of Ducru
5/7/24, 3:39 AM - For me more than 50% of the originals have been flawed. The reconditioned are amazing if you can get your hands on one. The auctions do not always indicate …
5/8/24, 3:33 AM - So many of the Ducru bottles from the ‘80’s were flawed that in 2011 when Hubert de Bouard took over he reconditioned all the bottles they had in stock as well as all they could buy back. Filtered, recorked with a non tainted cork and topped upWith wine from the same vintage. They did a nice job with it and the difference is astounding. A high percentage of the original bottles I have had have been corked or flawed in some way.
5/8/24, 3:13 AM - Definitely too soon, especially for the vintage and from Magnum. That oak will integrate eventually but it will be a long while.
5/8/24, 3:10 AM - That’s a high price. Double the release. It is a nice wine.
5/8/24, 3:02 AM - That is quite a Bordeaux cellar you have for the attacking!!
5/8/24, 3:00 AM - Do you think it is the vintage or the bottle? Or both?
5/6/24, 3:13 AM - Sounds amazing. I have a magnum of this that I am saving for a big family get together. Hope mine shows as well!!
5/7/24, 3:37 AM - Yes! It’s for my Dad’s 90th so I hope he will be impressed.
5/5/24, 5:33 AM - But it looks like you still liked it better than the Spottswoode?
5/7/24, 3:36 AM - Good to know, thanks
5/7/24, 3:31 AM - It was done in the name of science ;-)And lack of self control…
5/7/24, 3:29 AM - I am finding it hard not to drink these even though I know they don’t really get their magic until at least 10 yrs
5/5/24, 6:18 AM - Thanks both for the kind words. It would be fun to do a tasting with Ketan, it seems like each of the Beta wines are so different, it must have been interesting to taste them side by side.
5/6/24, 3:24 AM - He has created a nice portfolio of wines that are truly distinctive from one another.
5/6/24, 3:23 AM - This is good to go now but of course has decades of you want to wait
5/6/24, 3:22 AM - At your service!
4/28/24, 5:54 AM - I was very surprised. Then again, maybe there was a reason they were pouring this particular wine at this huge tasting. It was one of the few ‘older’ vintages at the event
5/6/24, 3:21 AM - Me too. I have visited and enjoyed Hall wines in the past. I’m sure a ‘13 will be great although I can’t speak for this cuvee.
5/6/24, 3:20 AM - You know what I mean, right?
5/6/24, 3:17 AM - MJP agree 100% . I have found this for most TR wines, they are decent on pnp but nothing special. Then transformed by air. I don’t think I have tried day 3 on this one yet.
5/6/24, 3:07 AM - Given the excessive VA it sounds like an off bottle
5/6/24, 3:05 AM - Oh yes we do! Thanks for the note, can’t wait to try.
5/6/24, 2:58 AM - Thanks—will heed your advice!
5/5/24, 6:24 AM - Thank for the update OG. That just reinforces how scary it is to just plan for day 3, because clearly you can miss it! I wonder if less air in the initial decant and just a slow ox might have made the difference? Definitely an art not a science.
5/5/24, 6:16 AM - They are drinking well, the friend who brought has had a number of them lately. But I wouldn’t wait too long.
5/5/24, 6:14 AM - I didn’t get over ripe at all so maybe that speaks to Mark’s bottle variation theory!
5/4/24, 6:54 AM - So glad to see this note. I have had mixed luck with 2000 Bdx so very happy to see the Ducru drinking well.
5/4/24, 1:52 PM - Zimmy, off is probably the wrong word for it, but many that you have mentioned have been closed to the point of not being enjoyable. Probably they need time but sometimes it takes a lot of faith to know what will happen when they wake up. Reviews have been getting increasingly better but I have been cautious about opening the very few that I own myself. The ones I have tasted have usually been at wine dinners bs my own purchases.
5/4/24, 1:53 PM - And I think 2010 is a great comparison
5/5/24, 6:11 AM - I hear you Zimmy! I know some people are really enjoying drinking these warmer vintages of Bordeaux while they are young, but it just seems like a waste to me when you know how amazing they can become. My children will also have great wines to drink when I am gone, although I hope to be able to enjoy some with them in my old age. Definitely pulled back on futures buying in the last few years.
5/5/24, 5:57 AM - Very cool! Thanks for the note, I forgot that I had these and nice to see it is so different from the Chuy (which was fine but not great).
5/5/24, 5:48 AM - Thanks for the check in on this. 2010 is really tough, I do think this might benefit from another decade but who knows
5/5/24, 5:46 AM - Great note, thanks. The moonracer seems to need more time than some of the other SVDs in my limited experience
5/3/24, 3:58 AM - Nice, glad to see this one is still drinking well. I have one left—not so many occasions where I think of drinking Bdx blanc
5/3/24, 6:25 AM - Did the others like it?
5/4/24, 6:57 AM - There is another note on this now that mentioned a 1 hr decant. I don’t think I ever give Bdx Blanc enough time. It is usually opened for the first course, and well waiting for the reds to get enough air. Defintely something to think about for my next bottles!
5/4/24, 7:46 AM - For some reason I am more likely to decant a burg or any Chardonnay. But never a BB. This is going to sound awful, but with the Chard I probably care more about the prep. Since I don’t love Sauv Blanc, I probably haven’t taken the same care to think about it or worry about how it shows. But I do really enjoy older almost oxidized BB, so it would also make sense that I would prefer the younger ones with a decant.
5/4/24, 1:55 PM - I have a ‘12 left, I’ll have to check the blend!
5/4/24, 6:33 AM - Your experience seems consistent with the other reviews. I have low expectations for my bottle
5/4/24, 7:43 AM - That is totally possible—I do hope you are right.
5/4/24, 6:01 AM - These are just so good…
5/4/24, 6:04 AM - You know I am not as focused as you on the palate descriptors, but these Aubert wines are worthy of the detail. So much complexity even this young.
5/4/24, 6:53 AM - Agree!
5/4/24, 6:46 AM - I have had an amazing bottle of this, and then another that was drinking so young and ‘unevolved’ for lack of a better term. Seems to be some significant variation.
5/4/24, 6:38 AM - Was about to write my slightly more favorable review for the Monbo when I saw this and it made my day. I think I expected less from my bottle and was more pleasantly rewarded. Great review!!
5/4/24, 6:35 AM - I don’t think I routinely give much air to white Bordeaux, but it makes sense. I will try it next time!
5/4/24, 6:29 AM - Great note, thank you!
5/4/24, 6:26 AM - Cos really comes into its own with some age, so if you possibly can hold off you will be rewarded. The 1996 is drinking incredibly right now!
5/4/24, 6:15 AM - Appreciate your note. I also have yet to splurge to the SWC but I am loving the 2013 vintage of champagne in general, so I might need to track this one down!
5/4/24, 6:11 AM - So far I have found 2020 to be my least favorite vintage of TR. Interesting, I haven’t thought of any of them as being truly Rhone like (vs Cali Rhone)—I will have to think about that when I try this one.
4/26/24, 3:21 AM - Julian, sounds like a great night as always. The 2008 is a specialOne, I think it is going to take a few more years coaxing before it ends up drinking like the Dom we know!!!
5/3/24, 4:33 AM - Hi Julian, will do…still trying to figure out my summer!
5/1/24, 2:54 AM - Did you decant this or slow ox and how long? I want to make sure my next bottle shows it’s best!
5/3/24, 4:32 AM - Excellent, thanks!
5/3/24, 4:16 AM - Fantastic note, thanks. Sounds like it is time to open my bottle— did you give it any air time?
5/2/24, 3:43 AM - That’s quite a comparison—now I must try one this weekend!
5/1/24, 3:08 AM - Lol
4/29/24, 3:46 AM - Thanks for the note—I appreciated the comparison with the ‘96 L-B. I am intrigued with the vintage and how it is drinking right now.
4/30/24, 1:41 AM - I have also had the ‘96 Cos a few times recently and it has been stunning, so it seems the whole left bank is a good bet for ‘96. And agree on ‘98 right bank—‘98 Angélus is one of our top ever wines. Less experience with right bank ‘95, maybe because ‘95 left bank has been a little disappointing so far and I have been avoiding it in general.
5/1/24, 3:06 AM - Yes so many great wines made a shift after the 90’s. I think the trend is swinging back….i hope.
5/1/24, 2:55 AM - Great note and I love the ‘effortless’ aspect.
5/1/24, 2:47 AM - Definitely loads of bottle variation
4/30/24, 1:37 AM - Thanks for the update on this, I had my Betas buried but now I will open one soon.
4/30/24, 1:36 AM - Thanks for the note. You found this on a restaurant list? Amazing.I am always surprised by how ‘young’ this wine drinks across all the 80’s vintages. Nice to hear that your bottle showed so well, gives me hope for mine.
4/30/24, 1:31 AM - I was thinking of bringing this to an ‘under $75’ Bordeaux and pizza event. But sounds like it isn’t ready. Other choice is an 05 Monbosquet
4/28/24, 8:29 AM - I’m wondering is 2000 a lighter vintage in general? I don’t know about Dow vs others, but I tried another 2000 that was surprisingly light
4/29/24, 4:15 AM - Thanks Pdad—appreciate the clarification and that makes sense with what I know if 2000 in the rest of Europe. I have not tried this Dow yet but the Adriano Ramos 2000 I tried was not as concentrated as I would expect. I’ll write it off to the producer or bottle. And maybe will open this Dow soon to compare.
4/29/24, 4:10 AM - Glad this showed well for you. I was surprised by how tannic it was and in need of cellar/decant time beyond what Ducru usually needs to show well. But agree it is a classic and so well made!
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
