Opened at the end of the evening to compare to a bottle of 1995 Pontet-Canet a friend brought. The nose and pallet of both wines were almost identical with the 2014 being slightly brighter/fresher with more acidity. Given the high critic scores of the 14 I expected a great wine but this was average at best and I was underwhelmed. Of the 6 different red, two bottles each of 13 dunn Napa Valley 13 Palo Scavino bric del fiasc 16 torbreck Descendant and 08 circa cab franc, the two Pontet-Canet were my least favorite. Perhaps I'm just not a bordeaux guy or maybe my pallet isn't sophisticated enough (im sure the bordeaux lovers would say this- LOL) to appreciate them, but, at least for me, there are a lot of places making better wine then bordeaux. Would not buy again and not a particularly good qpr. Having said all that, I do think Bordeaux makes the best chardonnay in the world!

Too light, even after some air. I usually love Completer but this one lacks almost everything, no personality, no intensity, no length.. you feel some complexity but it's so light that you find no definition.

Maybe my bottle was faulty, but doesn't seem so (no oxidation, etc.)
  • CompleterZRH commented:

4/6/24, 8:14 AM - Seems odd, as they actually produce their Completer like an orange wine and it has a lot of depth usually. My last 2018 at least was very nice.

All I wanted was some good wine. This didn't work out, but I made a killer Old Fashioned. 4 dashes orange bitters, 8 dashes Angostura bitters, 2/3 oz. simple, 2 oz. Four Roses Single Barrell 100 proof. A drop of luzardo cherry syrup and a cherry. 1 expressed twist of orange.

Opened it a few hours before we drank it and decanted maybe an hour in advance, we drank it over a few hours. I like the absolute clarity of the wine, the pure and bright cherry fruit, the intensity of the perfume on the nose and also on the palate - which felt more perfumed than flavored, if that makes any sense. I like the balance, I like the structure, I like the unadorned clean feeling of the wine, even with the inclusion of stems (although I wonder if he de-stemmed more in this lighter vintage?). It’s easy to see that there is a lot of wine here in a light package. I found it to be rather one-note though - all about the (very lovely) cherry fruit - there just was not a lot else happening. Very intense, but one-dimensional. What I at first thought might be rosemary oil or sage on the nose was actually volatile acidity, which became more and more evident with air. It did not improve over 4 hours open, and my instinct is that it will disappoint the person who cellars this in the hope that it improves in some dramatic way. I would have been stumped if someone poured this blind for me. I'm glad I tried this, but for me it's not a re-buy.

Etwas Reduktion im leisen Duft. Dazu hellgraues Gestein, getrocknete Kamille. Dahinter ganz fein glockenklare, hellgelbe Saftigkeit.

Complex and delicious - yet there's someting simple and "straight forward" to this wine that just appears appealing to my taste. On one hand I feel like "showing off" and show this bottle to all my "wine-nerd-friends" who appreciate complexity in wines. But I also want to show everybody else, like my good old mommy, the beauty and simplicity of this wine:-) Fresh notes red fruit combined with savory notes of herbal spices. The mouthfeel is phenomenal - good acidity, low tannin but still present. Wow!

Howard Ripley Old World New Wines tasting (Bridewell Hall): Not really to my taste: incredibly woody (not oaky) nose - almost overpowering. Vegetal, green pepper notes, green pickled chilli and blackcurrant. Quite fruity and spherical (yeah I said it) on the palate, retaining that woody/ capsicum edge. Tannins are a bit spiky, acidity is mouthwatering. It's interesting but I don't much want to drink it.

Vertical Tasting Seven Vintages from 1997 to 2018.

2018. Dark red. Cherry nose and rather closed. Light body, bright to sharp acid. Dark cherry, fine but young tannin. Long finish.

2013 Very dark red. Cherry, cassis, wood but not vanilla, white pepper nose. Terrific intensity on the welcoming palate - dark fruit, cherry, and blackberry. So light on its feet, and really athletic. Acid is obvious, tannin is firm on the finish but that is equalled by the intense fruit. Long finish.

2011 Very dark with a mahogany edge. Green pepper, cherry, and airy. Much larger body than the younger wines; it's mouth-filling. As with the 2013, the acid is obvious but balanced, in context. Leather, cherry, long finish... so impressive. the tannin is obvious on the finish. Later in the evening, the fruit is even more exotic.

2000 Dark red and mahogany edge. Peanut, smoke nose but ripe enough. Palate has cherry, leather, and some spice. Good concentration.

1999 Dark red mahogany cast. Green pepper, cherry nose. Very concentrated in a medium body. Palate has leather and cherry fruit. Balance is excellent, tannin is suave. Not the longest finish.

1998 Very dark with mahogany edge. Nose with green pepper and dark fruit and fruit liqueur. Leather and sweet cherry palate, so complex. Great length to the finish.

1997 Very Dark red and mahogany cast. Green pepper, horse sweat in the intense and mature nose. Green pepper then cherry then leather on the palate with great intensity.

Summary: I pick the 1997 as the best Sassicaia tonight and the 2011 is the wine with the best future.

Mystery wine: Very dark red, white pepper, blackberry nose. Cassi on the light-bodied palate. Tannin is drying and this seems not as ripe as the other wines tonight. I guessed it to be 10 to 15 years old and from California's north coast mountainside.... it is Haut Brion 2002.

Nice, rock-like minerality, citrus and green apple fruit with a herbal or rather vegetal layer that adds freshness to the bouquet. A buttery texture and more citric fruit on the palate. Not really layered, but fresh and sufficiently round. A really good every day wine.

let me translate the other tasting notes here, this is a wine dominated by volatile acidity but shows much better after 2 hours and at 65F, yes this continues to be volatile, apple cider and pear, and almond skin. finish has a distinctly waxy texture. there is a density of flavor and weight that speaks to the low yields and phenolic ripeness of these grapes. alcohol is in balance and acidity is bright. interesting food wine, on its own a bit too flawed to be drunk by itself. remarkably similar to a Joly Coulee de Serrant with 2% less alcohol or a lightly oxidized roussanne, like beaucastel's VV. no oak.

reductive impression on the nose (?). fresh citrus and small yellow fruits. Palate offers a great burgundy feel with again the lemon and yellow fruits combined with a lactic note and a very small oak impression. So far so good, unfortunately the finish is a bit of bummer where the wines fades out quickly.. I want a some more depth to the end when buying premium bourgogne blanc from one of the current rockstars. I'll drink my next bottle in a year or so and lets see how tings will work out.

Evening with friends (@Private location, Solingen): Glass: Sophienwald
Decanted for about an hour. My first Barbera from 2016. At the beginning a bit fruity, with time and air in the glass it developed more and more complexity and elegance. For a Barbera the high tannin and acidity is wonderfully integrated. The wine was lovely balanced and what amazed me especially was, that I did not recognize the 15% abv at all! Certainly very young, so either give it 2-3h of decanting time or wait for a few more years. Beautiful wine. 90-91+ PQR is a bit mediocre.

A biodynamic single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Neuchâtel. 13% alcohol.

Luminous, moderately translucent and quite youthful ruby red color with a hint of purple. The nose feels quite dry with a pronounced streak of London licorice and spicy Pinosity along with layered aromas of smoke, some blueberries, a little bit of brambly blackberries, light sappy notes of raspberry leaves, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of old, decomposing wood. The wine is dry, fresh and somewhat sauvage on the palate with medium body and quite intense flavors of fresh cranberries, some sour cherries, a little bit of fragrant orange peel, light brambly notes of raspberries, light sappy herbal tones, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of perfumed floral character. There's definitely a touch of brett here, but making the wine just quite perfumed and complex, not funky or dull. The overall feel is very balanced and nicely structured, thanks to the high acidity and firm medium-plus tannins. The finish is quite grippy, serious and moderately long with flavors of sour cherries, some black raspberries, a little bit of peppery spice, light boysenberry tones, an exotic hint of ripe peach and a gravelly touch of stony minerality.

A very tasty, serious and very slightly wild Pinot Noir with great depth and good sense of structure. The wine isn't particularly challenging in any way, but it definitely isn't an easy crowdpleaser either. All the pieces are in right places and there seems to be nothing in excess; shows good promise for future potential. Terrific value at 33 CHF (~30€).

Bottled unfiltered and without added SO2. 13% alcohol.

Youthful, luminous and translucent ruby red color. Youthful and rather primary nose with aromas of overripe raspberries, some blackberry marmalade, a little bit of sappy herbal spice, light juicy notes of black raspberries, a floral hint of violets and a touch of cigar wrapper. The wine is medium-bodied, dry and fresh on the palate with crunchy flavors of tart lingonberries, brambly black raspberries, some sweet plummy fruit, light primary notes of candied forest fruits, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of stony minerality. High acidity with light yet surprisingly robust and grippy tannins. The finish is fresh, acid-driven and moderately grippy with long, crunchy flavors of brambly raspberries, sour cherry bitterness, some stony minerality, a little bit of peppery spice and a hint of strawberry.

A very fresh, crunchy and still really primary Pinot Noir. Shows great potential with its firm, structure-driven nature and intense fruit, but the overall character is still so primary that it is hard to asses the true quality of the wine since it feels so candied and bubblegum-y. Most likely will turn out terrific, but still needs some more years down in a cellar. Let it wait. Priced according to its quality at 37 CHF (~34€).

The disappointment of the tasting. By proclamation, the highest classed wine, yet it finished well behind many other 'lesser' wines. Lacking freshness, pitch, and tension, and featuring charred oak and slightly cooked purple fruit, along with a pinched greenish finish. Would not hold beyond 2029.

Opened and let air for prob an hour or hour and a half before pouring (unfortunately no decanter although I think one would have helped). Initially a bit musty in the glass, but that blew off with some time. Starts with more of that leather and saddle oil but as it opens up get some plum and fig as well. There's a slightly green note in there too (maybe like the inside of a tree branch in the spring) but it actually lends a bit more interest to the wine. Overall very enjoyable. Went great with the peking duck.

Bordeaux 2018 I: A first look at the 2018 vintage at a merchant tasting in Zurich with 11 red wines tasted. It might be quite difficult to judge the wines (I don't have 30 years barrel tasting experience) but some relative conclusions still can be made: 1) the best wines are as soft and elegant as the best 2016s (Figeac, Conseillante, Carmes HB, Rauzan Segla); 2) The aromatic complexity and precision of some wines is very exciting (Calon Segur, Figeac, Carmes HB), 3) There are some wines which cannot mask the high(er) alcohol levels (Pavie Maquin, Calon Segur, Leoville Poyferre). Overall, I still think that 2016 will ultimately be the better vintage thanks to lower alcohol levels and a cooler, purer fruit. On the other hand, I see 2018 a tad above 2015.

TN: There‘s so much fuzz about this wine that the En Primeur prices went up by 30-40% already just two weeks after its release. Several critics gave this wine extraordinary high ratings, including straight 100 points from JM Quarin, I critic I follow closely for Bordeaux wines as he rather finds greatness in elegance than high-octane/high-extraction wines. Well deserved praises? The complexity in this wine is off the charts, definitely above the level of the other wines I‘ve tasted that day. Layers and layers of floral aromas, lots of different herbs, dark fruit, some crushed rocks, cola. Highly intense, high precision. Quite rich and powerful but with well-integrated but noticable tannins (not as soft and luxurious as Figeac, Conseillante, Rauzan Segla) and a good freshness. The alcohol is at 14.9% and eventhough there is a lot of fruit and other aromas they cannot completely mask that. In summary, I definitely see that this is a great, singular wine which will bring a lot of pleasure but I doubt it can reach the Olympus of wines and get to the 100 points some critics see. For that it is just a tad too alcoholic and bold.

I see this wine somewhere in the 93 to 96 point range.

From a half, drank over three days, alongside the same vintage Domaine de Chevalier. The most strapping, rustic, and backward 2015 vintage Bordeaux I have encountered, with no close second. Indeed, it put my mind to 2010 vintage Saint-Julien, or even lighter Pauillacs. Highly appealing, although not yet unfurled bouquet; it should develop captivating aromatics in time. The wine features effusive Cabernet Sauvignon markers (blackcurrant, pepper garden, graphite, and crushed rocks), along with appealing herbal and blueberry essences wafting in and out. Merlot and Petit Verdot add texture and depth respectively. Concentrated power, notably gripping, and among the most tannic Margaux wines that I have tasted...ever. Firm, with a few edgy transitions; the oak treatment has begun integrating. This needs time...a whole lot of it, at least a decade, probably two. Stash, forget, and rediscover many moons from now. It will not disappoint. 94-95...96?
