This wine brings a smile to my face. It is so, so bedrock, way more bedrock than Sonoma cab. The juicy clear streak of red fruited acidity, the aromatics that bring together pretty dried florals ans a touch of funky undergrowth, the carefully calibrated tension, the nicely present (but not overwhelming) fine tannins, the textural richness without any overt oak signatures to the profile - in other words, it bears more similarity to a Bedrock heritage blend than a CA Cab. Maybe just the barest hint of leafy pyrazines if you focus on looking for it.

This wine is really is its own creature, but if anything there’s a suavity and sexiness to the mouthfeel that brings me to Pomerol, even though I’m not sure there’s any Merlot in this wine at all. I want to knock it down a couple pegs for not displaying enough Cab typicity, but it’s just so darn tasty and winsome, I can’t help but fall in love with this wine.

3/21/22, 10:00 AM - Do you have any idea why the drink dates on this wine are so out of character with the other bedrock sonoma cab years of this same wine? 2028-2055 for this yr as opposed to other years. The '17 the 19 and now the latest one the 2020 say wait 3 yrs the 2018 is ten years makes no sense

2016 Carlisle Alicante Bouschet Pagani Ranch Sonoma Valley
Opened this at 10AM, which was 10 hours before we poured it. This looks like the same wine I tasted from barrel in 2017, showing the ink staining color in the stem last night when we poured it around the table blind. This is still tannic, it does throw off a bit of an alcohol signature and it's a big wine. Curtis Chen (C Chen) will have a note on this and took the leftover with him so I would go with his note as a reference. This was the last wine of the night, preceded by 8 others and I have to admit I was getting a tired palate by this point, which is why Curtis has the best shot here to tell the story from the leftovers.

4/25/21, 8:17 AM - Hi Frank i have a few questions about carlisle alicante bouchet and your notes seem to indicate you have some knowledge of this wine. I have a 2013 and 3 ea 2016 and 4 ea of the 2018's and i notice that each year seems to have a much greater drinking window than the previous one from 6yr for the 13 to 11 yrs for the 16 to 14 yrs for the 18's. seems odd to have such a disparity. And i am dying to try an 18 but it recommends holding till 2026. Would it be a waste of a bottle to open it now? thanks for any insight and info you might have thanks ... Ken

4/25/21, 1:11 PM - it was the carlisle website that i was referring to for the drinking windows that i mentioned for the various yrs of the alicante that i possess. Thank you for your prompt reply. I guess i will attempt to ask mike tho not sure if he would see my question about early drinking as i am sure he is quite busy to be individually answering random questions.

A new addition to the lineup of desire lines just got this today and had multiple bottles so thought i would try one. It has a wonderful streak of lemon running thru it, and it has more heft and body than the cole ranch. That being said i love Cody's deft hand in both of these rieslings and can see these being used for different types of food to compliment the wines. This wine should continue to only get better with some age for now it is a 90 ( way early in the game) with potential to go higher

3/12/21, 4:34 AM - to: cweiss to me the cole ranch version would pair better with lighter fish ( sole ,flounder shellfish such as raw oysters, raw little necks) chicken with salads or simply baked. where as the wiley version would be better served with heavier oily fish blue fish sword fish sardines or fish accompanied with cream or white types sauces same for chicken dishes ie with heavier sauces or marinades. Hope this helps....
