Muddy and earthy, lots of acidity which is characteristic to the vintage, if even to the quality, but bit too much brown sugar and maderization to be fully enjoyed, even with the help of a fruit day.

Better nose than palate. Significant wetness and underripeness. 90-91

My first time trying Bernard-Bonin, of which I had historically been a relative “hater,” since the prices really started to take off, and the hype really accelerated. As an enormous fan of the superior Bernard (B-V), I was trained to be a detractor of this wine.

HOWEVER, this wine is sexy as hell. Face-melting reduction, similar to a young Coche or BBV. Beautiful lemon and sesame (thx @nmmnori) aromas, which really flowered as the wine sat open but undecanted for 90-ish minutes.

Weighty yet simultaneously ethereal mouthfeel. Ripping acidity and electric lemon, with a really intense mid-palate and great length.

I get the hype around these now. Banger and silver medalist of the night for me. 93 / 100.

Generously donated by Lukas D. and did not disappoint. @nmmnori shed actual tears prior to vomiting it all back up on the West Side Highway. Too bad.

The wine itself mostly lives up to the extreme level of hype that it has come to have. Beautiful reduction upon opening, with some VA, both of which blew off quickly.

The wine to me is reminiscent of my first experience with Richard Leroy, 2016, and ultimately superior. A wine with an incredible attack and acidity that slaps you across the face, and contrary to past experiences some more structure and complexity. Would probably have kept getting better if it had lasted more than 90 minutes due to @nmmnori overconsumption.

Interesting comparison with the Pierre Menard Anjou, also 2018 and a much more traditional (IMO) style of chenin.

Infanticide. 92 / 100.

Tasted with TH Pan. Lovely 2020 from Benoit. Steely, acid driven, but still with a purity and elegance of fruit. What more can one ask for in a Chassange village. Have found that these wines maintain much of the house style from those made pre-2020 with Alex. Tasted side by side with 18 from Bernard Moreau and rather preferred the latter (counter to popular commentary).

4/8/23, 10:16 PM - Bernard Moreau (alex + benoit) more hedonistic and accessible now. Benoit likely better for the longer haul - different vintages also a factor.

Tasted with NMMNORI. Don’t entirely agree with his assessment. Relatively little fruit remaining, but drinks like it should at 40. Sous bois and tea (Nori is correct from time to time), with the ethereal, intense je ne sais quoi native to this wine and only a handful of others. An absolute delight - the last sip far better than the first.
