Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2023 Edition; 10/20/2023-10/22/2023 (Piedmont, Italy): Our friends met Chiara Boschis earlier in the day and she told them “ Ask Edgar a Tornavento to go for an old Mosconi” . Unfortunately the oldest they gasped was this 2012 and was a bit too young at this stage and definitely needs its time. Especially framed by the magnificent Sandrone Le Vigne 1996 ( Papies 96) was playing off the wrong side of the pitch.
Ripe and young, punchy fruit at this stage and firm tannin. Full on black cherry, big tannin still and need time to shed the puppy fat and roll into the great drinking years. Granted we prefer our wine more evolved hence this baby was a bit not here yet for us but one cannot argue with quality there especially in a poor vintage like 2012. 91-92 for now and with hope for the future

Violet, menthol, crushed rock, licorice, and maraschino liqueur. Full, with ripe cherry. Sinewy on entry with bracing acidity. Finishes with saline and plenty of fine tannins. Really exhilarating.

A few hours in, and the wine is really on fire. Add some capsicum to the very expressive nose and some coal tar on the finish. One of the best young nebbiolo-based wines I've ever had (94-96).

8/28/23, 4:46 AM - This is an accurate review in my opinion. Trying now, on day 2. Certainly a very vibrant, high tension wine. I am not the best at identifying the various flavour notes usually but I spotted the licorice on the palate immediately on opening. Less prominent now on day 2 as things integrate better. The only thing slightly missing I think is a bit more weight and length on the palate. That would make this wine very special, as opposed to very good. Whether those aspects emerge with time I have no idea. Still, two more bottles left so will wait a while to find out. Certainly very drinkable and very good today, but recommend decanting for a couple of hours at least.
