JM Vincent is the domaine to buy and drink in Cote de Beaune. This village wine made in a very hot year demonstrate the top level attained by the domaine (it was drunk alongside Geno Boulanger 2020 1er cru les Vergers and blew it) JM Vincent vineyards have high density planting, high canopies which protect grapes from ripening too fast, and the best winemaking techniques such as keeping only the first press juice...well the result is just stunning and prices remain low for the quality.

2014 Charles Van Canneyt Griotte-Chambertin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
From magnum. Airy, red fruited, spicy scents precede a red fruited and gorgeous attack with its silky sap, not overtly complex but some reasonnable depth of flavors, ending chalky and moderately long. Textbook Griottes. Did not have much expectation on this but actually a good surprise as this is a negociant cuvee.

2017 Benjamin Leroux Clos de la Roche Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Gorgeous scents of five spices and red berries introduce the wine, the attack is ultra refined and all red fruited, I very much like the pure silk on the entry, the mid palate lacks a bit of depth, ending in a gentle finish. After five hours of air, the wine sheds some of its sap and became tighter, revealing its tannic frame, the finish was longer and infused by chalk. This is a refined CDR, in the Leroux style, which is always elegant and balanced, I do think that Benjamin performs better in hot vintages as his elegant winemaking style delivers more when the fruit is more concentrated. Drink after 2027.

Very fine and pure scents of red berries and oriental spices introduce a bright, red fruits inflected and sappy mouthfeel with good depth of flavors. I like the airiness here. Can be enjoyed now.

Flower and white peach notes introduce a fine juice dominated by summer yellow fruits, best to enjoy now on its generous and sappy balance, quite a crowd pleaser.

On pop and pour this bottle exhibit more fruitiness and fullness from previous bottles, I just checked the lunar calendar, and today is flower day. The fruit is just so much more gorgeous, and intense. I can only encourage readers to try to open bottles on leaf day and fruit day to taste the difference. Or is it bottle variation ? Well just try ! This has no scientific rationale but on many occasions I felt the difference and wanted to share my experience.
Update: after a few hours of air, this becomes so pure, so red fruited, loosing the gorgeous 'fruit day' sap and turning into a much more complex, sneaking back on the buds limestone inflected mouthfeel, in a welter-gut punching way. Amazing how this wine changes over time, and packs depth of flavor, a hallmark of great wines. Punches well above its simple village level, bravo Pierre !

Bougros is not the most qualitative grand cru of chablis to the exception of the Cote de Bougros, which is a hill just above the main road along the Serein River and which sits on well drained soils (Fevre makes a special cuvee here) which lends the cote de Bougros wines airy and laser like qualities. The upper of Bougros is almost flat, and while that part is closer to Gd cru Les Preuses, it is less interesting than the cote de Bougros, and quite rustic. The Laventureux Bougros 16 displays airy scents with slightly herbal, iodine and citrus notes, then a bone dry and chiselled mouth follows, in a relatively monochrome and pebble infused finish. While this wine is good, it is more like a top 1er cru from the cote de Lechet. In Chablis, more than anywhere else in Burgundy, the winemaker makes the difference, and hopefully Laventureux will make more progress in the future, a producer to follow in the future.

Delicious Bougogne Blanc form the bottom slope in Meursault. This is the cuvee without sulfur. The style is precise, airy and energetic, and an outstanding generic burgundy. Pierre Henri Rougeot pratices "biodynamie". Elegance, purity and depth are the key words. Very worth seeking out.

A timid nose, barely revealing what's behind the curtain, then pristine definition of bright red fruits on entry, silky and liqueur like mid palate infused by limestone, ending in a good grip with plenty of very fine tannins in the very energetic and persistent finish. This is a first rate CdN punching well above its level. Top value here.
Note: This was drunk after 24 hours of air, as upon opening it felt disjointed and difficult to assess, so give this beauty plenty of air. Another thing to mention: upon opening, the wine had lots of CO2, which is a natural byproduct of fermentation, and which normally goes off at the winery with pumps over and racking. Here obviously the winemaker chose not to, to keep the energy in the wine, and keep the CO2 gas, as dissolved CO2 protects the wine from oxydation, which then requires minimum SO2. Keeping the purity and energy in the wine is certainly best practice these days. On day 1, after opening, I noticed the gas, and I actually shook the bottle a lot to make the gas go away, but that was not sufficient, it was only after 24 hours of air that the wine came to life. It is unfortunate that my retailer did not provide any information, so readers who are willing to try this wine should know what to expect and what to do, and ultimately open the bottle the day before, and not be afraid to shake the gas off. A final thing I'd like to mention. I have tasted this wine for several vintages and I see improvements year after year. So I would not be surprised if Antoine Lienhardt reaches a higher status soon.

Red and blue berry scents introduce a pliant wine that needs to develop more depth, and framed by a fiery tannic structure, ending with grip. The grumpy tannins which have started to mellow from last year, have lost some dryness, which is a good sign, and this wine still needs 5 years in the cellar to be ready.

Somber red fruited scents, with turned earth, some wood, followed by red fruits, dense and grippy mid palate with fiery tannins from ferrous soils, ending in a persistent take no prisoner finish. At this stage still a rough gem lacking brilliancy, but all the underlying materials are there. A long snooze in the cellar is necessary.

Consistent with previous notes, this wine is fresh, concentrated, and with better depth of flavors, ending in a long finish. The wood which was quite obvious two years ago has started to recede, a good sign for the future. Excellent. 2028-2038.

Very good Village, floral and airy nose of red fruits, spices, sappy mouthfeel pliant and also with grip and good persistent finish. Outstanding quality for a Villages.

Red berry, wood notes and spicy scents introduce a sappy mid palate with good depth of red and blue berries, licorice and chalk, ending with grip in a limestone infused persistent finish. While the refinement and lenght are first rate, the wine is text book 2014, with fine but fiery tannins, and a mat fruit profile. Cellar it a couple of years. Love Petits Monts.

The nose was quite closed, but promising, the mouth feel was a tad tight with some bitter notes, lurking in the background were blue fruits, Vosne spices, good sap, ending in a chalky and firm finish. This wine seems to have the underlying material to develop, but right now, not giving, this is to be retasted in five years to see where it stands.

2017 Domaine Y. Clerget Clos Vougeot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Lighter type of CdV reflecting the pliant vintage, sweet and easy going, with good aromatics and lush mid palate, good finish, although I was expecting more complexity and persistence for a grand cru, what I like in this wine is its delicacy, the absence of rusticity makes it stand out, a quality that sometimes other CdV lack.

Intensely ripe, plenty of new wood, dense, chewy, long and chalky. Quite over towering, and on steroids. This is a wine that cannot be paired with food at this stage, too much of everything except grace, to cellar for 20 years.

A hint of reduction on the nose, swirling brings some blue fruits notes, followed by a sappy and rich mouthfeel, blending a rich fruited mid palate and typical Morey structrure and tannic grip. This is a tad better than the first time I had it two years ago. Fine textbook Clos Sorbe, and on the plus side, no trace of heat/stewed fruits. Cellar until 2028.

A pale and airy wine with chambollesque aethereal red fruits and dried flowers scents are followed by a light but exquisitely perfumed red berries infusion, concluding in a fine finish. While this wine does not have the depth and concentration of the great 2020, it is nevertheless a very refined Gevrey which has the potential to deliver additional aromatic complexity in a couple of years. Very fine.

Upon opening, I had great hopes after reading the CT reviews, and reading descriptors online about the "profundity of Nebbiolo" in this wine, I liked the pale color but alas it felt like grape juice with some alcohol, very sweet, and very simple. After 24 hours of air, the grape juice wanted to become wine, and it did eventually, tannins, grip and some acids appeared. While this was much better on day two, I thought the wine shop descriptor of "a wine of breathtaking grace" could have been funny if the wine did not cost 85 bucks. Disinformation age or a root day ? Roll the dice gentlemen !

Champ is below Champeaux, on alluvial soild so slightly different soils than the 1er crus. A subtle nose of blue fruits, plums, violets and spices introduce Duroche champ, the mouthfeel is all blue and red fruits with good mid palate depth, the chalkiness and succulent acids are cutting the silk precisely, finishing with good persistence and brightness. I very much liked the zen like perfect balance, so far the best Champ produced for Duroche after the strong 2019.
Definitely above the Duroche generic village level, with more density, depth and punch, outstanding village, I thought after the first sip, how gorgeous this village is going to be after 2030. 90 now, 92 potential

Leesy and milky scents mingle with chalky and citrus notes, followed by a vivacious mid palate with very fine but splashy bubbles, ending in a bone dry, razor cut chalky finish. So let it breathe for an hour for domesticating the gas, personally I liked the peculiarity and the style, it reminded me of certain Selosse Initial in cold vintages.

So far for my palate, the best vintage made by Duroche. Picked at the right time, concentrated yet airy, all blue fruits and spices, with gorgeous textures, plenty and very fine tannins, nascent complexity. More relaxed after three hours of air. Hold till 2030. One of the best producer of Gevrey village in 2020 (with Marc Roy, Dugat, Denis Mortet and Rousseau).

I have always found year in year out, that VCV is the most underated pomerol from the plateau, and this mat vintage proves the point. Very fine scents of red and blue berries, with just a tad of very fine oak, the mouth is still very primary with geogeous red and blueberry flavors, with nascent complexity, in a soft structure. I very much like the silky mid palate, ending in an elegant finish. Give this beauty another 10 years and it should reach great aromatic complexity. It will never be a blockbuster but a wine of finesse and complexity. Thank you D.

Meaty nose with blue fruits, followed by an airy, and a tad diluted mouthfeel. While I like the pure expression of the blue fruits here without oak and sulfur, the energy and the soft feel, there is a tad of CO2 on the palate, which goes away after a vigorous bottle shake, but not much concentration, density or tannins. A refined wine, and good to enjoy now.

Scents of blood, iron, plum and licorice, with a whiff of vosne spices introduces the Murgers 2020. Initially tight and and quite closed, the wine became elegant and powerful after 24 hours of air, displaying aromas of blue fruits, wrapped in a frame of typical northern Nuits Saint Georges tannins, vosne being not very far, ending in a very minerally inflected long finish. There is very good judgement here as to the gentle extraction, this tannic wine which is naturally powerful, a Janus with two heads, one looking towards Nuits, one at Vosne, will be outstanding 10 years down the road. There is very good value here, this is a wine for cellaring.

Red currants, vosne spices, some mocha notes burst from the glass, then an all red fruited profile with strawberries, red currants and raspberries flavors followed by a matte mid palate, good depth of flavors, obviously Etienne Grivot chose to wait for maturity, (he usually was one of the last to harvest in Vosne), and it does indeed matter in cold years like this vintage, so this wine does not lack fruit, but one can feel the phenolic maturity is 2013, there are some unresolved tannins, which need further cellaring. The persistent, chalky and bud coating fresh finish is first rate in intensity. Drink now after decant, and very good potenial in five to ten years.
