2019 Lamy-Caillat Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grande Montagne Chardonnay
Obviously super early to be drinking but the village was sold out on the wine list, and well, it was my birthday. Initially, so fresh with loads of citrus and fruit, then with time in the decanter, came waves of Popcorn butter. With air and temperature I got fresh parsley, white flowers, minerality, and some lemon herb butter. Med+ bodied, med+ acidity and ending in a spiced, and very long, finish. Great concentration. Had next to the Domaine de Cassiopee Aligote Mitancherie 2020 and this wine made the Aligote feel like water in comparison. 14% alcohol but no apparent heat while drinking. Hope to be able to come back to this producer in the future with a bottle that has some age on it. Lovely! Also, I thought this paired WONDERFULLY with the grilled veal (with cep mushroom aioli, grilled maitake, sake white butter, French salad, crispy garlic & deep-fried leek). Much better than the Les Horees Bourgogne Rouge La Vieux Sage that I ordered to it!

Lovely nose with slight reduction notes, lemon, a hint of smoke, citrus, minerals, and some VA. Good acidity with lots of pure fruit on the palate with flavors of apples, lemon, minerals, and salinity. There's a slight waxy quality that adds weight. Quite long finish. This was super delicious, a fresh and well balanced wine!

Served double-blind. The wine pours a straw color with no rim variation; medium viscosity with no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is of medium intensity with lemon meringue, pineapple, limestone-like minerals and a touch of burnt microwave popcorn. On the palate, the wine is dry; medium(?) acid and medium(+?) alcohol. There is a very peculiar textural element that I’m trying to get my head around. I think this wine may have seen some oak but the barrels would have to have been used. The finish was long and had a saline quality to it. What the hell is this? I could see this being Chardonnay from a new world producer doing some funny stuff or possibly a Marsanne from the Northern Rhone? I will say that there is a hint of a green herbal/vegetal thing on the finish that is making me consider Sauvignon Blanc or Gruner Veltliner but I don’t detect the acid being high enough for SB and there is no way this is Gruner. I’m sort of stumped here…so I went with Marsanne from France, Northern Rhone, Hermitage Blanc with 3-5 years of age and I wasn’t comfortable with it…but whatever. I know that I liked this wine, whatever it was! Dang…this was Sauvignon Blanc and Didier Dagueneau Pouilley-Fumé to boot!! I should have trusted my identification of the vegetal note and considered Sauvignon Blanc a little longer than I did. The textural element is coming from contact with lees and threw off my perception of the acid. I’ll have to get better at understanding that. This wine is Benjamin Dagueneau’s VdF made with younger vines from the St. Andelain hill in Pouilly-Fumé. Drink now or over the next handful of years, easy.

This was advertised by a famous wine shop in NY as a once in a lifetime chance to own a baby Cros Parentoux, going the extra mile by adding an aerial picture with the cros parentoux and Les barreaux plots highlighted in photoshop as the not to miss topographic opportunity of this decade. As prices soar, retailers are becoming increasingly creative to sell wine. It is true that les Barreaux, like Champs Perdrix in Vosne deserve a special attention. But they are Village wines, and 100 feet by Burg standards is a million miles elsewhere. The trace of rusticity behind the plummy and spicy character is a reminder of its level, but this is still a very good hedonistic Vosne, for my taste I'd want more energy and freshness.

Beautiful vinous nose displaying yellow and red fruit, peach, apple, a hint of raspberry, cooper, honey, sweet spices and mineral. Very good concentration, finely layered red and yellow fruit, very fine medium generous mousse, rich and deeply toned but also showing very good balance, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long rich yellow and red fruit driven finish. Really nice BdN expression.

2017 Marguet Champagne Grand Cru Les Crayères Chardonnay
Bookclub--Wines Tasted Blind (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): Tasted blind last night. It was from my cellar so I knew the identity but I had the advantage of taking the leftover wine home to retaste today. That differs from the bottle 2 weeks ago that I tasted with Benoit Marguet at the winery when he poured it for me during my visit. In essence, a new context with more time to evaluate. My conclusion? I still dig it! Disgorged March 2022, 100% Chard, no dosage. The aromatic top note of asian 5 spice/cinnamon is present again, I presume from the new wood this sees during elevage. It's distinct, it lifts out of the glass. When this is chilled, the tonic/mineral quality of the zero dosage is present, which like other wines of this style, can be shut down when too cold. It's shame that they get consumed this way because for me, the character and true identity of zero dosage is best showcased when a wine is not cold, but just lightly chilled. Same is true here. Tangerine and lime flesh, even a suave apple as it warms. I'd call this opulent but I fear the dosage police would come for me so I'll just say that this is an excellent fleshy version of Crayeres, but please, do not drink this cold. Give it the grace of letting that chill fade and then evaluate it.

Burgundy, Day 3 (Beaune, France): At La Cabotte. Frankly, this has got to be one of the best white Burgundies on the market today. Like a recent 2017 Vireuils, this wine didn't initially seem to show much of the steely, intense profile that I would expect from Roulot, and as predicted, this benefitted greatly from the introduction of air. This was best at the end of the meal, and because we had a small splash leftover, we took it home with us, where it was sloshed around pretty aggressively in the car as we went from appointment to appointment. In the evening, this was now really strutting its stuff. You get the laser-like mineral precision here, but unlike the lieux-dits, there is a breadth and richness on the palate, a sort of horizontalness, if you will, that is just magnificent. Flavour profiles and all that are meaningless here -- this is, simply, white Burgundy.

"This is a wine I imagine people make in prison" (Chicago, IL): Served next to the Domaine des Lambrays version of this, it's so clear the stylistic differences between the two. Whereas the DdL takes on a very crunchy red-fruited profile, the TM shows more of an old-school earthier, slightly more rustic profile. There is more weight on the TM, and you actually feel a little more density in the wine. The absence of stems on the TM version also shows; the fruit doesn't feel as "fresh" (though we all know adding stems raises the pH and only provides a sensation of freshness). Overall despite preferring the nose and perfume of the DdL, I found the TM to show the requisite density and weight of a vineyard of this stature better.

Half bottle for wife's birthday. Bottle was in perfect condition from the winery. Lovely red fruit on the nose and palate, some spice, short but smooth finish. Our first experience with older vintage pinot, did not disappoint!

Opened two bottles which were pristine despite their nearly decade and a half age. Dark lemon yellow. No sign of oxidation but nice evolution with hints of creaminess in the nose and palate that also seems to add a nice texture as well. Acidity is still bright. Layers of citrus, orchard and tropical fruits as well as a solid mineral core. Very long on the finish. Just delicious both alone and with food, especially with my signature crab cakes.

Crisp, lemon, not too oaky, no green flavors. Nothing to dislike but nothing particularly outstanding or memorable. Good wine.
